Shafiqullah Ghafari shines with ball, Drissell helps South North to victory: League Roundup

With the North East Premier League and North Yorkshire South Durham Leagues underway, Durham Cricket will continue to provide weekly updates when Durham players are in action.

The entire local league programme was washed out on Saturday with rain hitting the North East.

Despite a washout on Saturday, Durham players were taking part in the ECB National Club Championship with the first round being played on Sunday.

Shafiqullah Ghafari was in the wickets again for Richmondshire as they beat Pudsey St Lawrence at Tofts Road. Ghafari claimed 3/9 from 4 overs as Richmondshire bowled Pudsey St Lawrence out for 128 in 28 overs. In response Richmondshire didn’t find the going easy in reply chasing down 130 six down to win by 4 wickets and put their name in the next round.

George Drissell picked up 3/14 to help South Northumberland cruise past Bradford & Bingley at Gosforth. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat but struggled to 158 all out as Drissell was the pick of the Bulls bowlers. Former Durham batter Sol Bell led the way for the Gosforth side with 81 as Drissell added 34 to help South Northumberland to an 8 wicket win.

Haydon Mustard was in National Counties action for Northumberland as they took on Staffordshire at Jesmond in the NV Play Trophy. Batting first the visitors posted 292/9 as James Kettleborough top scored with 95* for Staffordshire. In reply Mustard was in the runs for Northumberland with a half-century (56) off 77 balls. Despite 56 from Mustard, John Oswell was the only batter to support Mustard with 44 as Northumberland were bowled out for 224 falling short by 68 runs.
