Owen Harwood scores 116 as Durham Boys’ Under 18s hold firm to draw against Yorkshire at Weetwood

Owen Harwood scores 116 as Durham boys’ Under 18s pick up a third draw in round four of the ECB U18 Championship, against Yorkshire at Weetwood Sports Ground.

After being put into bat, Durham enjoyed a solid opening day scoring 331 before declaring overnight with four wickets remaining.

Bradley Sylvester took two first innings wickets for the White Rose, pinning Faizan Ghumman straight after lunch on 39 with Durham 90 for three.

Harwood led the way for Durham, sharing stands of 91 with Rory Mustard and 92 with Hugo Croft as the Ds pushed towards 300.

Harwood was dismissed with Johns Windows’ side just four runs short of that mark after striking a 166-ball knock of 116 with 15 fours and one maximum.

Croft ended the day unbeaten on 72 from 111 deliveries, hitting 12 fours.

Edward Minto claimed two scalps after Jack Temple’s opening strike as the hosts were reduced to 77/3 before a mammoth fourth wicket partnership put Yorkshire on top.

Will Bennison and Peter Greenfield put on 279 together with Bennison scoring an unbeaten 233 from 209 balls with Greenfield adding 93.

The Tykes declared on 420/5 with 10 overs remaining on day two, leading by 89 after Jim Twiddy claimed a pair of wickets.

Faizan Ghumman was given caught behind in the second over before Durham steadied things the following morning with Noah Worthy (51), Callum Gaffney (35) and Luke Symington (33) all making contributions.

Owen Harwood was in the runs again in the second innings as he added 46 in an 83-run stand with Temple.

Both were dismissed in quick succession though and when Rory Mustard became Greenfield’s third victim, Yorkshire were threatening victory having taken three wickets in as many overs.

But Durham held firm, leading by 166 with two wickets remaining when a stalemate was called with Yorkshire.

Durham will close their Championship campaign against Leicestershire at Uppingham School commencing Tuesday 26 August.
