Durham Cricket Foundation celebrates Great North Run team after raising more than £4,000

Durham Cricket Foundation is celebrating the efforts of its 12 strong Great North Run team after runners raised more than £4,000 to support the charity’s work across the North East.

The Foundation’s runners took on the iconic 13.1mile route from Newcastle to South Shields on Sunday 13 September, joining 63,000 participants for this year’s AJ Bell Great North Run.

Together, the team has raised £4,427 for Durham Cricket Foundation so far, with fundraising pages still open.

The team included Durham Women’s Head Coach Danielle Hazell and Academy and Pathway Performance Director Will Gidman, who were among the 12 runners representing the Foundation at this year’s event.

The funds raised will support the Foundation’s work to create opportunities for people across the region, including its partnership with Great North Children’s Hospital, SEND Player Pathway and the continued development of women and girls’ cricket.

Foundation coaches currently deliver cricket-based activities at Great North Children’s Hospital three days each week, while the SEND Player Pathway provides free development and playing opportunities for talented young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

The Foundation is also continuing to build opportunities for more women and girls to discover cricket, connect with local clubs and progress within the game.

Graeme Weeks, Chief Executive of Durham Cricket Foundation, said: “We are proud of every one of our 12 Great North Run runners and grateful to them all for choosing to support the Foundation.

“Taking on 13.1 miles is a huge personal challenge, but they have done it while carrying the Foundation’s work with them and helping to raise more than £4,000 for our programmes across the North East.

“Every donation helps us create more opportunities for people to experience our sport and benefit from the game. That could be introducing a young person to cricket for the first time, a patient taking part in an activity at the Great North Children’s Hospital or creating new and innovative opportunities for people to take part in and enjoy the game in ways that work for them.

“A huge thank you goes to our runners, everyone who has donated and everyone who supported them along the way.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the 2026 Durham Cricket Foundation Great North Run campaign can still do so through the Foundation’s fundraising pages:
