Former England and Durham Cricketer Geoff Cook will headline the launch event of Durham Cricket Foundation’s new community programme Walkers & Talkers on Tuesday 11th February.
The free programme will combine a guided walk and talk around the grounds with an opportunity to hear from Geoff Cook as he reflects on a distinguished cricketing career.
Durham Cricket Foundation is bringing Walkers to Talkers to the region for the first time. Originally created by former professional cricketer Andrew Brassington, the initiative is now delivered at four venues nationally, offering a welcoming way for people to enjoy gentle physical activity, conversation and a shared love of the game.
The first session will run from 10am-12pm at Banks Homes Riverside in the Geoff Cook Suite, proudly named after the headline speaker. Cook will be joined by Andy Brassington, who will deliver a talk about the programme.
The Walkers & Talkers project began in Bristol in 2022, when Andy Brassington started organising informal walks at his local cricket club after seeing friends struggle with isolation and declining mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic. What started as a small social meet-up has since grown into a much larger social inclusion initiative, now supporting over 400 members nationwide.
Andy Brassington said: “Walkers & Talkers was created to give people a simple reason to get out, move a little and talk honestly. Cricket gave us common ground, but connection is what keeps people coming back. Bringing this project to Durham is incredibly exciting and I’m proud to see it continue to grow with the support of Durham Cricket Foundation.”
This new initiative combines gentle walking, conversation and guest speakers to support adults and promote mental and physical wellbeing, bringing people together and building meaningful social connections through a shared love of cricket.
Durham Cricket Foundation will pilot the programme with monthly sessions for the first year, supporting its wider commitment to improving community wellbeing, inclusion and access to physical activity across County Durham.
Graeme Weeks, CEO at Durham Cricket Foundation said: “This project aligns perfectly with our commitment to community wellbeing. Walkers & Talkers is simple, inclusive and impactful. Having Geoff Cook launch the programme adds real significance and will help spark meaningful conversations from day one.”
The programme is open to Durham County Cricket Club members and the wider local community. Those interested are encouraged to register in advance to secure a place at the launch session.
