Mitchell Killeen scores 79 in vain as Durham Second XI fall to final day defeat against Nottinghamshire at South Northumberland

Durham Second XI 239 & 181 v Nottinghamshire Second XI 330 & 230/9dec

Mitchell Killeen scores 79 in vain as Durham Second XI fall to a first Championship defeat of the season, on the final day defeat against Nottinghamshire Second XI at South Northumberland.

Durham began the day on 7/2 with a target of 322 for victory and had made a steady start, Wilf La Fontaine-Jackson and Luke Symington adding 38 for the third wicket.

But then wickets began to fall rapidly as Alan Walker’s side fell from 45/2 to 49 for six, losing the quartet of La Fontaine-Jackson, Scott Borthwick, Haydon Mustard and Robbie Bowman.

Symington and Mitchell Killeen provided some respite with a partnership 64 before Symington’s knock was ended on 43.

The Ds continued to frustrate the visitors in their victory quest with Killeen and Stanley McAlindon putting on 61, Matt Montgomery providing the key breakthrough having McAlindon edge behind.

Joe Pocklington ended Killeen’s defiant innings shortly after, the 20-year-old striking 11 fours and two sixes in his 93-ball 79.

Pocklington wrapped it up in his following over, having Callum Gaffney caught by Dane Schadendorf with Durham 181 all out.

Rob Lord claimed figures of 3/37 supported by two scalps each for Tom Giles, Pocklington and Montgomery.

Seven wickets were shared between Mitchell Killeen, Brett Hutchinson and Callum Gaffney but Durham Second XI face an uphill task on day four against Nottinghamshire Second XI at South Northumberland.

After rain denied play for much of the day, Nottinghamshire Second XI resumed on 147/3 with 40 overs possible on day three at South Northumberland.

Alan Walker’s side made a bright start as Mitchell Killeen removed Dane Schadendorf’s off stump in the day’s second over.

The visitors managed to add 20 to their overnight score before losing two quick wickets and when another pair of batters fell in quick succession, Nottinghamshire were 184/8.

Edward Minto hit the top of James Hayes’ off peg 13 runs later but the Trent Bridge based side added a further 33 before they declared to leave Durham requiring a total of 322 for victory, with three overs to bowl on day three.

Killeen led the way with the ball for Durham as he claimed 3/60 supported by Brett Hutchinson and Callum Gaffney sharing four wickets and one apiece for Stanley McAlindon and Edward Minto.

The visitors were able to pick up two strikes late on day three, Matt Montgomery bowling 15-year-old Jim Twiddy before England’s Olly Stone saw the back of Daniel Hogg.

Robbie Bowman scores 97 but Durham Second XI go into day three on the back foot against Nottinghamshire Second XI at South Northumberland.

Durham began day two on 16/2, trailing by 314 and got off to an undesirable start losing both Scott Borthwick and Daniel Hogg to the bowling of Thomas Giles within four overs of the morning session having added 13 runs.

Robbie Bowman and Haydon Mustard led the response with a partnership of 69 to bring the Ds just two short of 100 when Mustard departed for a 39-ball innings of 33 after he was wrapped on the knee roll by Rob Lord.

Lord struck again soon after as he produced an outside edge from Mitchell Killeen and when Matt Montgomery found a thin edge from Jim Twiddy, Alan Walker’s side were 118/7.

But Bowman was still at the crease for Durham and he shared a steady partnership of 90 with Stanley McAlindon to take Durham past 200. Bowman made 97, falling agonisingly short of making three figures with 16 fours and one six in his 140-ball knock.

McAlindon and Callum Gaffney added 31 for the eighth wicket but were out within five balls of each over, with Gaffney making 20 and McAlindon falling last for 44. Durham were bowled out for 239 ending up 91 runs behind after the first innings.

Giles claimed three wickets for the visitors with Lord, Montgomery and Ismail Mohammed taking two apiece.

Brett Hutchinson was the first Durham bowler to make a breakthrough after an opening stand worth 44 but McAlindon followed up by finding Ben Martindale’s outside edge just over four overs later.

Montgomery added 22 with Sam King before watching Killeen peg back his off stump 79/3 and leading by 170.

King and Dane Schadendorf both closed out the day unbeaten on 34 as Nottinghamshire made their way to a 238-run lead with seven wickets in hand heading into the third day in Gosforth.

Callum Gaffney claims a five-wicket haul as Durham Second XI dismiss Nottinghamshire Second XI for 330 on day one in their ECB 2XI Championship fixture at Roseworth Terrace.

After Scott Borthwick opted to bowl first in Gosforth, Durham’s bowlers were made to toil as Sam Seecharan raced to a 68-ball century before lunch in an opening partnership worth 143 for the visitors.

Seecharan struck 20 boundaries and one maximum as he led the way for Nottinghamshire with 104 from 74 balls. Callum Gaffney brought Seecharan’s innings to an end in the 23rd over with a top edge into the hands of Borthwick.

Stanley McAlindon then claimed his first wicket in the following over with Montgomery falling lbw for nought with the visitors 144/2.

The Trent Bridge based side added 77 for the third wicket before Jim Twiddy removed Sam King striking him on the back pad for 30 as the Ds began to chip away at the visitors’ lineup.

Gaffney claimed the next two wickets having Dane Schadendorf caught before bowling Ben Martindale on 88 with a peach of a delivery. McAlindon then added two wickets to his tally, removing Ismail Mohammed and Olly Stone in consecutive overs to leave Nottinghamshire 294 for seven.

Gaffney then produced another fine delivery as he hit Rob Lord on the back leg too, claiming the eighth for Alan Walker’s side.

Edward Minto trapped a sweeping Joseph Pocklington on 20 and Gaffney wrapped up with figures of 5/66 when James Hayes reverse swept to Borthwick for a low catch at slip with the visitors all out for 330.

There were 11 overs remaining on day one when Nottinghamshire had been dismissed and they made the most of their evening spell in the field as Thomas Giles and Stone claimed a wicket apiece to leave Durham 16/2 overnight.
