Preview: North East Warriors vs Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire

The North East Warriors take on Nottinghamshire Women and Derbyshire Women next in the Vitality Women’s T20 Competition.

With one win under their belt, the Warriors will look to win at least one of the two fixtures as they strive towards their aim to finish in top four of their group.

The Warriors are currently in third position in their group of seven, after recording one win and one loss at Whitburn Cricket Club last Monday, 18th April.

Nottinghamshire lost their season opening fixtures against Lancashire Women and the North Representative Team, placing Notts in sixth position in the group, while Derbyshire recorded a win against the North Rep Team, but a loss against Lancashire.

Head Coach Tom Cant said: “This weekend is crucial for us in our aim to finish in the top four in the group. With Yorkshire and Lancashire securing two wins already it looks like the other five teams will challenge for two spots so we need to be at our best against Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.”

Durham’s and Northumberland’s merged side played two friendlies against Leeds Bradford UCCE Women, winning both earlier in the week, which would give the team some confidence in the T20 Competition this weekend.

Commenting on the friendly games, Tom Cant said: “It was good to get more time at the middle for the batters and some overs into the bowlers.

It was great to see Under-15 Trudy Johnson score her first senior 50 and that should give her plenty of confidence going into this weekend.

“With the ECB T20 competition starting so early in the season we couldn’t play any friendlies before the first two games last Monday. We know the university team were missing a few players, but it was good to get two wins, build the confidence individually and as a team ahead of two tough games this weekend.”

Reflecting on the first two games in the ECB T20 competition, Tom Cant said: “We know where we came up short v Yorkshire and we saw improvements v Cumbria so let’s hope we can have a good day against Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and put in two good performances.

“We’ve been hit by injury and unavailability but that creates opportunity for other players which is exciting.”
