U12 Boys claim Ampleforth trophy for first time in 25 years

Durham’s Under-12 Boys scored a low scoring thriller by just two runs to claim the Ampleforth College trophy after 25 years of asking.

Durham took the glory against South Yorkshire in a game reduced to 28 overs due to rain.

Having won the toss, Durham elected to bat losing both openers cheaply and struggling at 12/2 however a 44-run partnership between Freddie White and Ethan Connolly steadied the ship.

Harry Pearson then came into the attack for the Tykes and picked up four wickets as Durham got into a slight bit of trouble at 76/6.

White (34) and Young (28) top scored for Durham, as they closed their 28 overs on 101/9.

Durham began well with the ball in their hunt for victory as Joe Twiddy and Matthew Robinson struck in the opening stages leaving South Yorkshire 19 for the loss of two wickets.

A quick fire 22 in 12 balls from Oliver Smith led Yorkshire to 45/4, but once Smith fell, Durham dug their way back into the game.

Requiring ten to win from two overs, South Yorkshire were almost over the line but a superb final over restricted the Tykes to scoring just four runs. Durham winning by 2 runs and claiming the Ampleforth College trophy.

Durham Cricket Academy Head Coach, John Windows said: “This is a great achievement for the boys and credit to the performances they have put in over the last week at Ampleforth.

“We had two games that went right down to the wire, which were very exciting, so all in all a good week for the boys.

“To win it for the first time in 25 years is a great achievement for the club.”
