Trevaskis, Short combine to tame Falcons

Durham Cricket 160-5 (Short 68, S Steel 47) beat Derbyshire Falcons 153-7 (Godleman 39; Trevaskis 3-16) by 7 runs.

A birthday knock of 68 off 48 balls from D’Arcy Short set the platform for Durham’s fourth win of their Vitality Blast campaign, but it was a stunning spell from Liam Trevaskis that turned the game in the Ds favour.

With the hosts ahead of the rate at the halfway stage, Trevaskis removed Leus De Plooy (15), Wayne Madsen (30) and Alex Hughes (3) in a six-ball spell that reduced the Falcons to 94-5 from 87-2

A late spell of rain almost brought proceedings to an early end before Durham eventually clinched victory by 7 runs.

Short and Scott Steel once again set the tone at the top of the Durham order notching their third 100-run partnership of the Blast season.

Short was in imperious form once again striking 10 fours and one maximum before top edging a shortish ball Daryn Smit for 68.

Some tight bowling from the hosts restricted the scoring rate with only Steel 47 and Peter Handscomb (23*) registering double figures.

After Billy Godleman got Derbyshire off to a flyer – scoring 39 off 21 balls – wickets from Brydon Carse and Nathan Rimmington brought the Ds back into the game.

A budding partnership from Du Plooy and Madsen pushed Derbyshire ahead in the game before Trevaskis ran rough-shot through the Falcons middle order.

Some late order hitting from Fynn Hudson-Prentice (31*) kept the game on a knife-edge until the very end, but Durham held out for a vital victory.
