The Riverside ready for ICC Cricket World Cup bow

The Riverside Durham is all set host Sri Lanka against South Africa in the first of three ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures at the home of Durham Cricket this Friday.

The weather is set to be scorcher at Chester-Le-Street as the World Cup approaches a potentially thrilling climax to the group stage.

Victory for the Sri Lankans will lift them to fifth in the table with two matches remaining – drawing level with fourth-placed England in the hunt for a semi-final berth.

Lasith Malinga ran through the England batting lineup in their last match as Sri Lanka overcame the hosts by 20 runs – removing Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Jos Buttler in a stunning display of fast bowling. He’s taken eight wickets in four appearances in the competition.

Meanwhile the South African side will be looking to restore pride after a disastrous campaign. They sit ninth in the table, only ahead of Afghanistan, and have already been eliminated from knockout contention.

Star of Durham Cricket’s 2018 Vitality Blast campaign Imran Tahir has taken 10 wickets for the Proteas and will enjoy his return to The Riverside. He took two wickets in South Africa 49 runs defeat to Pakistan last time out at Lords.

There will be plenty going on in and around the ground on matchday to enhance your experience of the Cricket World Cup.

Sri Lanka then host the West Indies on Monday as they look to keep their semi-final hunt alive before England host New Zealand on Wednesday in what could be a crucial fixture for the host nation.
