Mitchell Killeen 7/20 guides Durham to opening 2XI Championship win against Essex

Day 3, Durham beat Essex by 271 runs

7/20 in 9.3 overs from Mitchell Killeen guided Durham to victory over Essex in their opening 2XI Championship game of the season at Woolpit.

After being dismissed for 439 earlier in the day, Durham set Essex 436 to win in a day and a half and the visitors got off to a great start when Mitchel Killeen trapped Feroze Khushi lbw for 2.

Wickets in back-to-back overs from Killeen and Gibson reduced Essex to 29/3 after 8 overs and already facing an uphill task.

Killeen soon had his fourth when he had Will Buttleman caught for 0, leaving Essex 46/4 at lunch.

Luc Benkenstein and Aron Nijjar steadied the ship for Essex with a 55-run partnership for the 6th wicket, however Benkenstein hit out to mid-on for 69 and was caught off the bowling of George Drissell for his second scalp.

Killeen then finished the job with two wickets in two balls as Essex were bowled out for 164 and Durham earning a comprehensive 271 run victory.

Killeen starred with 7/20 from just 9.3 overs with George Drissell bagging 2 and Hogg one.

Durham are next in 2XI team action on Monday 1 May when they take on Leicestershire at Kibworth.

Day 2, Durham 186ao & 364/8 lead Essex by 360. 

Durham Seconds are in a strong position leading by 360 going into day 3 of their 2XI Championship match against Essex at Woolpit. 

Resuming on 149/6 and trailing by 37 runs, Essex added 41 runs to their overnight score being bowled out for 190 – leading by Durham by 4 runs.

Daniel Hogg claimed 3 wickets on the second morning before Liam Trevaskis wrapped up the innings trapping Will Buttleman LBW for 50. Hogg finished with figures of 4/16 from 8 overs while Brandon Glover claimed 4/25.

Durham lost two early wickets in their reply as McKinney and Whitfield both fell for 0 but 64 from Harry Crawshaw with 14 fours steadied the ship for Durham backed by 75 from Liam Trevaskis including 11 fours and 2 sixes.

Both Crawshaw and Trevaskis departed following the introduction of legbreak bowler Luc Benkenstein who picked up 4/59 from 20 overs.

It was then over to George Drissell and Mitchell Killeen who shared a seventh wicket stand of 118 taking Durham from 242/6 to 360/7 to close the day on 364/8 and leading by 360.

Mitchell Killeen closed the night unbeaten on 55 from 120 balls while George Drissell was bowled late on day 2 for 59 from 64 balls.

Day 1, Durham 186ao lead Essex 149/6 by 37 runs 

The ball dominated day 1 of Durham’s opening 2XI Championship fixture against Essex at Woolpit Cricket Club.

Ben McKinney captaining Durham for the first time since being appointed skipper of the side won the toss and elected to bat.

McKinney and Crawshaw opened the batting with the pair adding 49 for the first wicket, before Harry Crawshaw was caught behind to a low diving catch off Ben Allison for 26. Ross Whitfield the new batter added 70 for the second wicket with McKinney – with Ross being bowled for 33 to give Jamal Richards his first scalp.

McKinney top scored for Durham with 81 off 90 balls however he fell to Allison who picked up 6/41 including a triple wicket maiden. 19* from Stanley McAlidon and Brandon Glover (16) took Durham to 186 being bowled out in 43.1 overs.

Brandon Glover, playing in his first red ball game for the club was on form dismissing the Essex top order – as he bowled Paul Walter for 22 and pinning batters two, three and four LBW.

Stanley McAlindon bagged Durham’s fifth when he had Josh Rymell caught for 2, as Essex went into tea on 58/5 trailing by 128.

Daniel Hogg picked up Durham’s sixth shortly after tea, but a 7th wicket stand of 69 between Buttleman and Allison took Essex to 149/6 at the close trailing Durham by 37.
