Teddy Minto (6/52) and Luke Symington (108) star as Durham Boys’ Under 18s got their season underway with a two-day friendly against Yorkshire at Richmond.
Minto claimed eight wickets in the match while Symington scored a second innings century but the young Ds fell to a hard-fought two-run defeat to Yorkshire.
The White Rose elected to bat first but it looked as though that may have been a mistake as Zac Smith and Max Percival struck early to leave Yorkshire 17/2.
The White Rose fought back with a 47-run stand before Teddy Minto claimed his first scalp. Joe Thompson passed fifty and top scored with 51 before Minto tore through the Yorkshire lineup.
Durham picked up three quick wickets through Minto as Yorkshire fell from 87/3 to 97/6. Louie Wilson (43) and Ashwin Krishnan (45) stemmed the flow of wickets with a 51-run partnership.
Minto removed the former and picked up his sixth wicket to claim standout figures of 6-52 in 25 overs including 10 maidens.
Luke Symington took the final two Yorkshire wickets to wrap up the opening innings on 206 inside 66 overs.
In response, Faizan Ghumman added 44 in a second-wicket stand of 88 alongside Symington – who made 66 not out from 75 balls with nine fours and two sixes.
Durham cruised to 160/3 in just 32 overs, declaring at the end of the opening day with Yorkshire leading by 44.
Yorkshire then made 215/4 in 43 overs before declaring with Peter Greenfield (61*) and Safiullah Abrar (51) passing fifty. Teddy Minto and Harry Walker claimed two wickets apiece.
Symington led the way for Durham as they chased 259, striking 108 from just 106 balls with 12 fours and a trio of maximums.
He was backed up by Owen Harwood’s 57 and Robbie Bowman’s run-a-ball 41 but Yorkshire’s bowling effort led by Krishnan (5/24) saw Durham fall an agonising two runs short of their target.
