Half-centuries for Bowman and Harwood but Durham Boys’ Under 18s fall to first Championship defeat to Lancashire at Hartlepool

Owen Harwood and Robbie Bowman score half-centuries but Durham Boys’ Under 18’s fall to their first Championship defeat of the season against Lancashire at Hartlepool.

The Red Rose put Durham into the field first and put on 45 for the opening wicket before Brett Hutchinson struck in back-to-back overs, leaving Lancashire 55 for two.

Lucas Kennedy and Gennaro Reddy shared a 124-run stand to put Lancashire into a strong position in the 36th over, when Reddy was dismissed for 59.

Kennedy went on to score 143 from just 153 balls as he led Lancashire to 270 when he became the fifth wicket to fall. The visitors managed to add a further 123 runs to their total, posting 393 in Hartlepool.

Noah Worthy claimed four wickets for Durham with Luke Symington, Callum Gaffney and Hutchinson grabbing two apiece.

Faizan Ghumman (46) and Symington (48) got the hosts off to a convincing start with an opening partnership worth 106 but both were out in consecutive overs sparking the loss of five wickets, with Durham 112/5.

Robbie Bowman made 51 as he and Hugo Croft (31) stabled the ship for the young Ds with a stand of 75 before Lancashire made their way through Durham’s tail.

Durham managed to add 26 for the final wicket but were unable to avoid the follow-on, trailing Lancashire by 164 runs. Haider Hussain was the pick of the bowlers for Lancashire claiming 5/73 backed up by Luca Doyle’s 4/52.

Rory Urquhart got Lancashire off to a flyer in Durham’s second innings with two scalps in the opening over before this was compounded with the loss of Symington, with Durham 22/3.

Owen Harwood scored 70 as he and Jack Temple (44) took Durham just 28 runs behind Lancashire but George Brown dismissed both batters either side of the wicket of Bowman to leave Durham 140/6.

Hugo Croft and Will Alexander gave Durham some hope with a partnership of 74 but Doyle saw past the Durham tail, claiming 4/44 and giving Lancashire a target of 74 to win.

Charlie Harmison claimed two quick wickets, followed up by a pair of strikes for Callum Gaffney and one for Andrew Fowler but Lancashire triumphed by five wickets.
