Ds Abroad: players head overseas for winter

As the winter months arrive, several of the Durham squad have headed overseas to continue playing cricket in Australia, New Zealand and United Arab Emirates.

The 2019/20 domestic season in Australia and New Zealand has recently got underway and playing overseas enables players to continue working on their development ahead of the English season come April.

Nathan Rimmington has signed for the Karnataka Tuskers in the Abu Dhabi T10 competition. The Tuskers will take on Delhi Bulls in their first game at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on November 16, with Rimmington being coached by experienced leader Tom Moody. Rimmington will play alongside Hashim Amla and Marlon Samuels when the competition starts next month.

Cameron Steel has returned to his home club, Claremont-Nedlands Cricket Club in Perth, where he played throughout his teenage years before moving back to England. The side finished the Western Australian Cricket Association – 1st Grade division in second place last season, four points behind top spot and will be looking for more of the same success this campaign.

Liam Trevaskis, Jack Burnham and Graham Clark have all headed off to New Zealand ahead of their new season. Trevaskis will play for Upper Hut United in New Zealand’s capital Wellington playing in the Rothbury Capital City Premier Division.

Jack Burnham will be playing his trade with Johnsonville Cricket Club also in Wellington, playing at Alex Moore Park, while Graham Clark has joined up with Auckland Cricket Association side Auckland University Cricket Club.

Two younger members of Durham Cricket are also playing overseas this winter. Sol Bell who made his Durham first class debut against Glamorgan in September is playing for Fremantle in Perth and is already contributing with the bat. The right-hand batsman top scored against Perth Cricket Club with 67, as Fremantle chased down 173 to win by three wickets, earlier in the season.

Academy youngster Jonathan Bushnell is playing alongside Cameron Steel at Claremont-Nedlands Cricket Club and impressed on debut in the clubs second grade game against Midland-Guildford. Bushnell scored an unbeaten 83 from 88 balls as the ‘Tigers’ chased down 228 to win by 8 wickets.

All at Durham Cricket wish all our players the best of luck throughout the winter, keep an eye out on our social media pages for updates of how they’re all getting on.
