Ds Abroad: Cameron Steel fires century for Claremont-Nedlands

Cameron Steel scored an impressive 138 from 239 balls as Claremont-Nedlands closed day one of their Western Australian Cricket Association 1st Grade fixture on 314/7 against Joondalup.

Steel amassed 14 fours in a well-made century, his first for Claremont-Nedlands, which was brought up with a boundary four at Creswell Park. Jackson Edmonstone added 80 from 134 balls in their first innings total.

The Tigers will continue where they left off next Saturday [14 December] as they look to continue their positive start to the season.

Academy youngster Jonathan Bushnell was also in the runs for Claremont-Nedlands, closing unbeaten on 82 against Joondalup in their 2nd Grade fixture at Iluka Sports Complex.

Bushnell was one of three Claremont batsman to be in the runs, hitting five fours in 77 balls for his 82*, as they closed on 383/4 from 90 overs. Will Pike (107) and Elliot Hitchen (100*) both scored centuries in the Claremont Innings.

Upper Hut United Cricket Club won by just eight runs in a low scoring contest against Naenae Old Boys Cricket Club.  Batting first Upper Hut were bowled out for 129 in 36 overs, Ollie Newton providing much needed runs at the top of the order with 52 from 88 balls.

Naenae Old Boys were in control as they looked to chase down the runs required, however Liam Trevaskis dismissed both openers to put his side back in contention for victory. Once Trevaskis had both openers back to the pavilion, runs became hard to come by, with Newton claiming (3/29) and Lahiru Vidanalage (3/25). Trevaskis closed with figures of 2/19 from ten overs.

Jaynesh Patel tried his hardest to keep his side in the game with 16 from 71 balls – but Naenae Old Boys were bowled out for 121 in 47.1 overs as Upper Hut United won by eight runs and keep up their excellent start to the season.

Johnsonville Cricket Club won by six wickets against Hutt District Cricket Club at the Recreational Ground. Hutt District were bowled out for 169 in 54.1 overs with Finley Kruger (57) and McArthur Kennerley (51) the top run scorers for the home side.

In reply, Jagdeep Singh led the way with an unbeaten 76* supported by 67 from Sheil Gandhi. Jack Burnham wasn’t required with the bat, as his side cruised to victory by six wickets in 35.4 overs.

Michael Jones is currently in action for Scotland against the USA in their opening ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in the United Arab Emirates. A full round up on Jones performance will be in next Monday’s Ds Abroad article. The live scorecard can be followed here.
