Durham Boys’ Under 18 draw opening Championship match of the season against Nottinghamshire

Durham Boys’ Under 18s secured a draw over Nottinghamshire in their opening County Championship match of the season at Brandon.

Visitors Nottinghamshire won the toss under rainy sky and inserted Durham which proved to be the correct decision as the hosts were dismissed for 179 inside 70 overs.

Durham were on the back foot from the off and were reduced to 19/3 in the opening stages as Byron Hatton-Lowe dismissed Oliver Clark and George Fishwick cheaply.

Skipper Faizan Ghumman tried to steady the ship as he faced 99 balls for his 36 but feathered one behind after sharing an important 50 run stand with Jack Temple off 98 balls for the fourth wicket.

Temple added 38, backed by 47 from Hugo Croft. as Durham were all out for 179 with Riley Boswell the pick of the bowlers with 4/23 from 16.

The visitors lost Adi Badge early to Charlie Harmison and Matthew Kennedy for 9 to Finlay Barlow, however Notts skipper Byron Hatton-Lowe led the way with 121 supported by 35 from Butcher and 22 from Huges as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 287 with a lead of 155.

Persistent rain throughout the morning on day two meant play only got underway at 4:30pm with 40 overs remaining as the visitors looked to put their dominance on the game.

Hugo Croft (3/45), Andrew Fowler (2/39) and Noah Worthy (2/86) all contributed for Durham as the visitors were dismissed with 10 overs remaining on the penultimate day.

Durham lost Ollie Clark for 5 late on day two, as the hosts closed on 36/1.

The home side got off to a solid start on the final day as Faizan Ghumman and George Fishwick shared a second wicket stand of 50 in 65 balls, before Ghumman was caught and bowled for 62 from 77 balls with 11 fours and 1 six.

Fishwick who was also involved in a third wicket stand of 50 with Owen Harwood scored 51 but he fell after bringing up his half-century with Durham leading by 42.

Once Fishwick departed, Owen Harwood and Jack Temple continued on from the foundations laid by the Durham top three, with Harwood scoring a fine 81 backed by 61 from Jack Temple.

Hugo Croft then scored a 34 ball 54 with 9 fours and 1 six as Durham set Nottinghamshire 245 to win from 40 overs.

Durham got off to a strong start in response picking up three quick wickets as Hugo Croft and Noah Worthy both struck, however a 90-run stand for the fourth wicket from Kennedy and Lambert put paid to any victory as both captains shook hands at 17:45, with Nottinghamshire closing on 121/3.
