Durham Women return to action with 13 in contention to take on Warwickshire

Durham Women return to Metro Bank One Day Cup action tomorrow taking on Warwickshire at Edgbaston Foundation Community Ground, as the business end of the season heats up.

Dani Hazell has named a squad of 13 as Durham look to remain in contention for the knockout stages of the Metro Bank 50 over competition.

After a month’s break from the competition due to the Hundred, Hazell’s side return to List A action for the first time since their commanding 105-run win over Somerset at the Cooper Associates County Ground in July.

Durham picked up their fifth win of the tournament last time out and remain in the hunt for a top four spot ahead of match number 11 on Thursday.

Hazell’s side sit fifth in the table with five wins and five defeats with 24 points and face a Warwickshire side who are seventh in the group with 11 points having picked up two wins from their 10 games.

Durham go into the game without an overseas player following the completion of Suzie Bates stint with the Club as the Kiwi International has returned home ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup later this month.

Hollie Armitage leads the way for Durham with 498 runs, with Phoebe Turner top of the wicket taking tally with 21 poles.

Words from Dani Hazell

We had two great wins over Lancashire and Somerset before the block for the Hundred so we go into tomorrow against Warwickshire in decent form.

Everyone is looking forward to being back together as a group and putting performances in for Durham again after month.

It was important that we went into final four games with something to play for and still be in the hunt for the knockout stages going into the final month of the season.

The majority of the group have been at the Hundred and the girls who weren’t involved have been in practice along with a few loan matches in tier 2 – so they should all be up to speed.

We have had a good few days back training and everyone is raring to go tomorrow, we look forward to putting a performance in.

Squad v Warwickshire (4 August)

Opposition Corner

Captain: Georgia Davis

Head Coach: Ali Maiden

The big question: There is a tangible excitement around Edgbaston at the full integration of the women’s team into the county set up. Now can the players deal with the element of pressure that comes with expectation – and serious investment by the club – and deliver success?

Player to watch: Georgia Davis. Off-spinner Davis has thoroughly vindicated her decision to quit the police for full-time cricket by rising into the England set-up. Birmingham-born Davis will be looking to captain her beloved Warwickshire to success and pile up wickets to advance her international career.

Young gun: Davina Perrin. Warwickshire will look to 18-year-old Perrin for big runs at the top of the order. The Wolverhampton-born batter is an exciting stroke-player and will take confidence from her productive Hundred campaign where she smashed a century against London Spirit. The 18-year-old reached her century from 42 balls, the fastest in the women’s competition and second fastest in The Hundred overall – just a ball slower than Harry Brook in first.

Final thought: Edgbaston has a big place in the history of women’s cricket and all at the club would love the women’s team to add to that by hitting the ground running. There is talent in the squad and much experience in the coaching set up with Ali Maiden (Head Coach), Darren Franklin (Assistant Coach) and Kabir Ali (Bowling Coach). A new chapter beckons: Bring it on!

Squad: Georgia Davis (Captain), Meg Austin, Em Arlott, Chloe Brewer, Hannah Baker, Bethan Ellis, Abbey Freeborn, Katie George, Hannah Hardwick, Charis Pavely, Davina Perrin, Amu Surenkumar, Millie Taylor, Issy Wong, Nat Wraith.

The Club’s match centre will be in operation for the fixture with live scorecards, statistics & video highlights as they happen.
