Banks Homes Riverside Stadium has been buzzing with excitement during CelebrAsian Week, a vibrant celebration of Indian culture.
From a dazzling welcome for the India Women’s cricket team to a special community day with Young Asian Voices (YAV), and with more festivities planned this weekend, Durham Cricket is bringing the community together through sport and heritage.
A Grand Welcome for India vs. England
On Tuesday, 22 July, The Riverside welcomed the India Women’s team for their Series Finale clash against England Women with a spectacular cultural display. The concourse came alive with vibrant Indian dance groups, powerful singers performing cultural mashups, and Dhol drummers setting the rhythm for an unforgettable day. CelebrAsian Week’s opening event celebrated Indian heritage, uniting fans in a colourful prelude to the thrilling cricket match that followed.
Young Asian Voices Hit the Pitch
Today, the excitement continued as Young Asian Voices, an all-inclusive and multicultural youth and community organisation, brought local children to play on the same pitch where India and England competed. Dozens of kids took part in the community day organised by YAV in partnership with Durham Cricket; batting, bowling, and having fun.
The YAV partnership is a key feature of CelebrAsian Week, fostering inclusivity and inspiring the next generation. David Jackson, Marketing Director, shared his thoughts on the week and what is means to Durham Cricket “CelebrAsian Week is about connecting communities and celebrating Indian culture through the sport we love”.
Argie Bhaji Festival This Weekend
The festivities roll on this Saturday and Sunday with the Argie Bhaji festival on the Riverside concourse. Ten food vendors will serve up authentic Indian delights, from sizzling street food to sweet treats. Dhol drummers will keep the energy soaring, and henna artists will offer intricate designs for foodies of all ages. This family-friendly event promises a weekend of flavour, music, and cultural pride.
A Home for Cricket and Community
CelebrAsian Week underscores Durham Cricket’s commitment to diversity and community engagement. As the Riverside prepares to host more Internationals in 2026, including England vs. New Zealand (ODI, 10 May), England vs. India (IT20, 1 July) and England vs. Sri Lanka (ODI, 22 September), the stadium remains a welcoming hub for fans from all backgrounds.
Don’t miss the Argie Bhaji festival this weekend! It’s fun, free and fabulous for all foodies. 12-7pm Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th.
