Durham boys under 16s kicked off their ECB County Cup campaign with a three wicket win over Derbyshire at Durham City as Thomas Briggs (88) and Andrew Stonehouse (4/23) impressed for Durham.
Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat – which initially looked the wrong decision when they were reduced to 15/4 inside 10 overs.
Andrew Stonehouse was on fine form as he blew away the Derbyshire top order along with a run out from Aditya Paul, as the visitors were in real trouble.
Spinners Jake Pattinson and Ethan Hill kept the run rate under control and despite going wicketless, the pair kept Durham on top throughout the middle overs.
Despite losing four quick wickets, a fifth wicket stand of 121 between Oscar Edwards (66) and James Jordison (50) helped steady for the ship for the visitors.
Late order hitting from Derbyshire, saw them finish on 199 /9 as Andrew Stonehouse was the pick of the bowlers with 4/23 from 10.
In reply, Durham started their chase in a similar pattern to Derbyshire losing two wickets in the powerplay as opener William Ball dismissed both Durham openers.
Spinner Manav Badpora then picked up Twiddy and Hill as Durham were reduced to 53/4.
A crucial fifth wicket stand between Thomas Briggs and Jack Dalton helped get Durham back on track, with Dalton falling for 31 followed by Syed Haque for 20 off 18.
A 46-run partnership from 36 balls from Briggs and Charlie Franklin (21) saw Durham hope with 2 overs to go as Thomas Briggs finished unbeaten on 88 from 116 balls.
Briggs led the way with his 88 which included nine fours.
