Wickets Tumble on Opening Day

Another big match for Durham this week saw the home-side looking to top the Championship race after an outright win against Yorkshire last week sees them just 5.5points behind the leaders.

Facing third placed Sussex, Durham won the toss and elected to bat first, something they have done in every match at Emirates Durham ICG this season.

Durham got off to a shaky start losing Keaton Jennings in the 6th over with the opener trapped lbw by Anyon.

Scott Borthwick and Mark Stoneman then got going at the crease with Stoneman looking particularly steady.

The pair put on 39 before Borthwick edged Magoffin to the keeper to have Durham 55-2.

Stoneman continued to look impressive at the crease and combined with Will Smith to get the home side back on track.

Stoneman brought up his 50 in the first session of the day with his half century coming off 69 balls and including 10 fours.

The duo got the Durham tally looking healthy and combined for a 67-run stand.

The partnership ended when Smith edged to Yardy who juggled a catch in the slips off Anyon to dismiss the number four for 32 leaving Durham for 122-3.

Stoneman continued at the crease and looked destined for back to back centuries after making 122 at Scarborough last week.  However Hatchett had other ideas and bowled the opener just four runs shy of his century, Stoneman out for 96 in an innings which included 16 boundaries.

Sussex then got on a bit of a roll claiming the wicket of Durham skipper Paul Collingwood after he contributed just the one before being trapped lbw by Hatchett leaving Durham 5 wickets down with 164 runs on the board.  Hatchett then claimed the wicket of Phil Mustard who edged to Finch for 5.

Young duo Michael Richardson and Usman Arshad then remained composed at the crease for Durham to get them their first batting point as the pair guided Durham past 200.  Their 50 run partnership came off just 70 balls and they compiled a 54-run stand before Richardson became Anyon’s third victim as he trapped him lbw for 31.

It was soon after when Magoffin got second gamer Arshad lbw after making a well-earnt 30, leaving Durham into their tail enders 226-8.

Chris Rushworth lasted just the two balls, victim to a good Yorker from Magoffin on just his second ball.

The final two added 19 with Mitch Claydon finishing on 18no and Onions the last man out, mistiming and finding Beer giving Anyon his 4th wicket as Durham finished all out for 245.

Durham started well with the ball with Graham Onions setting the tone on the first ball of the Sussex innings, Nash nearly chopping on first ball.

Rushworth was also looking dangerous coming from the other end and was unlucky to not claim the first scalp in his early spell.

Onions was rewarded in the 8th over when he claimed two wickets, firstly dismissing Nash for 19 who edged to Colly at second slip and then three balls later trapping Yardy plumb lbw.  It was a double wicket maiden over which swung the moment late on Day 1.

Mitch Claydon then struck with seven overs to go on his second ball removing Gatting’s off stump from the ground to have Sussex 48-3.

Sussex survived the final 25 minutes of the first day and will resume Day 2 on 60-3.
