Wickets Tumble on Day Two

Seventeen wickets fell on Day two as Durham continued their battle with Warwickshire at Emirates Durham ICG.

Durham were able to bowl Warwickshire out, taking nine wickets whilst the visitors took eight for themselves in the final session of day two.

Earlier in the day a heavy downpour when the players were in their warm ups delayed play for half an hour but the rain passed quickly and players were soon met with blue sky and some sunshine for the remainder of the day.

Warwickshire’s Chopra and Porterfield added 38 runs before Chris Rushworth got his day off to a good start dismissing Chopra for 35 with Richardson taking a good catch in the slips in the first half hour of play.

The following overs saw a couple of chances in the slips with edges just falling short until Rushworth got his second twenty minutes after his first with Borthwick holding onto a catch to dismiss Porterfield for 24 leaving Warwickshire 76-3.

Troughton and Ambrose steadied for the visitors and put on 36 before Mark Wood came into the attack and clean bowled Ambrose for 12 five minutes before the lunch break.

The Durham momentum continued when Ben Stokes got his first wicket of the day in the final over before lunch with Troughton dismissed for 21 when he edged one through to Phil Mustard.

Speedster Mark Wood then claimed Durham’s 6th wicket not long after the lunch break when he once again went through a Warwickshire batsman, this time clean bowling Javid for 6.

Patel and Barker then provided the resistance for Warwickshire combining for a solid partnership which past 50 before Chris Rushworth picked up his 3rd getting Barker lbw for 31 ending a 72-run stand.

Patel continued to annoy the Durham attack and brought up 50 with a six before Ben Stokes clean bowled him a couple of overs later for 53 leaving Warwickshire nine wickets down. Stokes then picked up his 4th wicket of the innings moments later removing Wright’s leg stump to bowl Warwickshire all out for 209, giving Durham a 58 run lead.

The Durham second innings started well with Stoneman and Jennings putting on 49 before Jennings was dismissed for 11. Number three Scott Borthwick then came to the crease but his stay was short lived after edging one to slips for just 2 leaving Durham 52-2.

It wasn’t long after when Smith edged to Westwood at short leg and he too departed before reaching double figures.

Stoneman continued on his way however, finding the gaps to surpass 50 with a boundary. It was the seventh time this season (out of ten innings) that Stoneman posted a half century, coming off 70 balls and including seven boundaries.

With 20 overs to play Stokes was then the next man to depart and he did in frustration as he was run out after a mix up with Stoneman, Stokes stumbling back short of his crease on 5 leaving Durham 91-4.

Durham then lost another two wickets in quick succession with Collingwood leaving one to be dismissed lbw and then Mustard’s second ball went straight to Patel to leave the home-side reeling at 106-6 with a lead of just 164.

Stoneman continued to find the boundary and combined wih Michael Richardson to put on a further 21 runs until the opener chopped one back onto his stumps to depart after a solid knock of 83.

With Durham having a lead of just 185, Graham Onions was the next man in and he and Richardson batted out a nervy few overs  but gave Durham a lead of over 200 until Onions was bowled by Rankin for 5 with just seven balls remaining in the day.

Richardson 26* and Wood 2* then saw out the final over to finish the day on 152-8 giving Durham a lead of 210 going into day three.
