Weather restricts Seconds to Lady Bay draw

Result: Durham 2nd XI (422; Steel 109, Trevaskis 93; Footitt 3/59, Milnes 3/61) drew with Nottinghamshire 2nd XI (264 & 107/1)

A combination of bad weather & bad light forced the Seconds’ to take a draw in the Championship fixture against Nottinghamshire at Lady Bay.

Despite being in a strong position ahead of the final day after making the hosts follow-on, the elements were bad enough to halt play for the duration of the day.

A strong middle order effort with the bat hoisted Neil Killeen’s side up to 422, underpinned by a fine century from Scott Steel.

Steel’s counterattacking knock came off 97 balls with 17 boundaries, including two maximums, in a 153-run with fellow all-rounder Liam Trevaskis for the sixth wicket.

Trevaskis fell seven shy of his century while Brydon Carse, making a return to batting following injury, struck 57.

The hosts knuckled down after losing two wickets, with experienced opener Jake Libby & Will Fraine adding 138 for the second wicket.

The first of four wickets for Ben Whitehead removed Libby before two wickets on 202, including Fraine for 86, put them back in control, with Whitehead & Steel taking seven between them in bowling Notts out for 264.

That total was eight shy of the follow-on target & they were forced to bat again, losing Chris Gibson to Gavin Main early on.

Libby again helped to steady the ship in an unbroken 96-run stand with Liam Patterson-White.

With three games now completed in the Second XI Championship, Killeen’s side lie second in the table with a win & two draws.
