Visit to table-toppers up next in Specsavers CC

Durham make the short trip across the Midlands to face Specsavers County Championship leaders Warwickshire at Edgbaston, starting tomorrow (Sunday, 22 May).

Durham will be hoping to maintain their solid County Championship form and recover from their disappointing defeat to Worcestershire Rapids in the Natwest T20 Blast last night.

Jon Lewis knows his side will have to be on top of their game against the Championship leaders, despite the table painting a strange picture going into the seventh round.

Warwickshire are top of the pile, having played a game more than Durham and won only once – a thrilling victory over Nottinghamshire in the last round of fixtures.

Yet the visitors come high in confidence too, having recorded their first win in four attempts with a 73-run victory over Lancashire during the week, and are intent on breaking a run of four straight defeats in this fixture.

Having been thwarted by the rain in the three previous matches, the weather stayed on Durham’s side during the fourth and final day as Paul Collingwood’s overnight declaration proved an astute decision.

Scott Borthwick’s century in both innings deservedly caught the headlines and earned him the Specsavers County Championship’s Player of the Week, but Lewis was particularly pleased with a number of performances – not least from his relatively inexperienced seam bowling unit.

Brydon Carse, Barry McCarthy and James Weighell all registered career-best figures in the win, including a five-for for McCarthy in the first innings.

And all three retain their place in the squad for the trip to Edgbaston, the second of four away matches during the Investec Test match period at Emirates Riverside.

Usman Arshad and Graham Clark are additions to the XI who defeated the Red Rose.

Squad vs Warwickshire (22-25 May): Paul Collingwood (c), Mark Stoneman, Keaton Jennings, Scott Borthwick, Jack Burnham, Michael Richardson, Ryan Pringle, James Weighell, Brydon Carse, Barry McCarthy, Graham Onions, Usman Arshad, Graham Clark
