Thirteen to choose from for Specsavers CC opener

Head coach Jon Lewis will have a 13-man squad to choose from ahead of tomorrow’s Specsavers County Championship opener against Kent at Emirates Riverside.

South African opener Aiden Markram is the only addition from the squad which was named against Durham MCCU  last week, a match that was eventually restricted to one day due to the weather.

Markram could open alongside Will Smith, who makes a second debut for the Club following his return from Hampshire during the off season.

Nathan Rimmington & Gareth Harte are also included & could make their first-class debuts for Durham.

Lewis also has the choice between wicketkeepers, with Michael Richardson & Stuart Poynter both donning the gloves during the 50 overs Durham spent in the field last Sunday.

Squad vs Kent (20-23 April)

Paul Collingwood (c), Cameron Steel, Aiden Markram, Will Smith, Gareth Harte, Graham Clark, Michael Richardson, Stuart Poynter, Matthew Potts, Nathan Rimmington, Barry McCarthy, James Weighell, Chris Rushworth

Last time out

5-8 September 2017 – Durham (217 & 259/7d) drew with Kent (206 & 184/9)

Kent wicketkeeper Sam Billings dragged himself off the sickbed to rescue his side from defeat, with Durham falling one wicket short of the win – as they had done at Canterbury earlier in the season.

The sides were only nine runs apart on the first innings, with Mark Wood’s career-best 77 hauling the hosts to 217 before Sam Northeast’s 110 was over half of Kent’s 206 all out.

Tom Latham’s century, backed up by 86 from Graham Clark, gave Kent a mammoth total before early wickets seemed to hand Durham the momentum which would carry them to victory.

However, Northeast & Billings frustrated Durham. The former fell to give Paul Collingwood’s side hope & Graham Onions trapped Adam Milne LBW to become the Club’s highest wicket-taker in first-class history, but a last wicket stand between Billings & ex-Durham man Mitch Claydon confirmed the match as a draw.
