Stokes Helps England Under 19s to Victory

James Vince, who did not play in the Test, and Joe Root provided an ideal riposte to Monday’s setback with an opening stand of 153 after captain Azeem Rafiq won the toss.

Durham all rounder Ben Stokes, who won Young Player of the Year at the club’s end of season awards dinner, then lashed four maximums and two fours en route to 47 from 27 deliveries to help his side to 258 for eight in 50 overs. Left-arm spinner Mominul Haque claimed 3-22 from seven overs.

Gloucestershire seamer David Payne removed Bangladesh’s openers cheaply before Stokes and Surrey’s Matthew Dunn struck as the hosts’ top four fell for one, two, three and four respectively.

Stokes left Bangladesh floundering at 23 for five and they never recovered. The medium-pacer capped a fine all-round display with the final wicket in the 46th over to finish with 3-21 in 7.3 overs.

There were two wickets apiece for Payne, Dunn and Warwickshire left-arm spinner Paul Best.
