Somerset claim win over Dynamos at Taunton

Durham Dynamos lost to Somerset by 8 wickets at Taunton on Sunday

The Dynamos hit their first hurdle early on when Phil Mustard was caught behind off Peter Trego with the sixth delivery of the innings.

Durham were 9-2 when Trego struck again in the third over, with Johann Myburgh (1) caught by Jos Buttler.

Paul Collingwood was the third wicket to fall when he was caught in the covers by Craig Waller off the attack of Craig Meschede for 7.

The Dynamos were 34-4 when Trego claimed his third wicket, catching Mark Stoneman (17) off his own bowling.  A 33 run partnership between Gordon Muchall and Ben Stokes proved vital to the early stage of the innings before the latter was caught by James Hildreth on the ropes off the bowling of Max Waller.

A wicket maiden from Waller in the 20th over saw Durham fall to 85-6 after Gordon Muchall was caught on 24.  Dale Benkenstein was run out on 16 with the Dynamos four short of the hundred mark bringing Scott Borthwick to the crease.  He was trapped lbw by Thomas four deliveries later with Dynamos 97-8 in the 24th over.

Breese added 30 in a stand with Mitchell Claydon (18), who was victim to a diving catch by Craig Kieswetter off Gregory.

Durham posted Somerset a target of 148 for the win after Chris Rushworth was bowled by Gregory for three leaving Breese unbeaten on 31.

Somerset reached 33 before losing their first wicket, that of returning batsman Marcus Trescothick, who was bowled by Chris Rushworth for 15 in the sixth over.

A 58 balls hundred from Kieswetter, which included nine fours and six maximums, saw Somerset get easily within reach of the Dynamos total.  When he was eventually dismissed on 103, thanks to a catch by Borthwick off Rushworth, the remaining pair had little real work to do.

Somerset claimed the win by 8 wickets within 21 overs with Hildreth 9* and Compton 20*.

At the close of play Dale Benkenstein said, “I think it was a good wicket, it was really disappointing that we got off to such a poor start. There’s still a chance in the competition but we have to win every game, the real worry now is not about qualifying but the cricket that we are playing.  There’s losing and there’s playing bad cricket and this week has been a tough week, it’s just disappointing batting-wise that we’re not getting it right and we’ve not been getting it right all season.”
