Smith: It was a really special moment

“It was just amazing to win the LV= County Championship in front of a big home crowd at Riverside, the atmosphere was fantastic,  it was a really special moment , probably one of the proudest moments of my life.   I think we can go even further, I don’t think this is the end of it, we want to continue lifting trophies, the players here are driven and want to continue to get better”, said Smith.

“I’m over the moon,  I’ve thrown all my energy into captaining the side properly, which I hope has shown.  My batting has suffered a bit but I’m sure that will come on as my captaining experience grows.

“We have so many guys who are putting their hands up wanting to win games for Durham – it sounds simple but in a lot of teams you don’t actually have that especially when the tough moments come, sometimes people can try to hide but there has been no hiding whatsoever from the guys playing for us – when we’ve needed them they’ve put their hand up to win for us.

“We’ve been able to win from all kinds of situations which is why we’ve been successful.  We’ve had times where we’ve had deficits on first innings and still got ourselves in a winning position.  In every game we’ve been pretty much on the ascendancy”, he added.
