Emilio Gay and David Bedingham scored sublime unbeaten centuries in a record-breaking third-wicket partnership of 290 as Durham successfully chased 336 to beat Lancashire by eight wickets in their Rothesay County Championship Division Two match.
Durham had a challenging start as they lost both openers in the morning session, but Gay and Bedingham led a recovery for the hosts as the runs started to flow before lunch.
As the ball got softer and the sun came out during the afternoon session, batting became easier for Gay and Bedingham and their partnership went from strength to strength, as they broke their side’s record for the highest third wicket stand against Lancashire.
Both made centuries and the hosts chased down an imposing target with ease as Durham reached 336 for two, handing the North East county a second win of the season.
After being 124 for seven in their first innings and heading for a hefty first innings deficit, the partnership cemented an excellent turnaround for the hosts, with the efforts of Matthew Potts also key to that. The victory takes them up to second, one point behind Lancashire, who remain top, but Durham have played one game fewer.
The see-saw game between the two likely promotion contenders was set for a thrilling climax on day four with Durham needing 336 runs and Lancashire needing 10 wickets for victory.
James Anderson and Tom Bailey settled into their bowling rhythm nicely early on, but Durham openers Ben McKinney and Alex Lees successfully negotiated the best part of the first hour.
Lancashire then had their first, with Lees departing after he misjudged a delivery from Mitch Stanley and left it, with it clipping the top of his stumps.
That brought Gay to the crease, who hit two boundaries in his first three balls, and he injected some impetus into Durham’s chase.
The back-and-forth nature of the contest continued as the reliable George Balderson bowled McKinnney to hand Lancashire their second wicket.
Gay hit back-to-back boundaries off Stanley as Durham started to increase the scoring rate, while Bedingham clubbed a six on the legside just before lunch.
Lancashire had a near miss just after the break as Gay edged a Bailey delivery that dropped just short of Keaton Jennings at slip. Despite that near miss, the runs kept on flowing as Bedingham managed to find a gap on the onside to pick up a boundary.
The pair then saw the target dip under 200, as Gay passed fifty for the second time this season and Bedingham followed suit shortly after with a cut past third region.
Gay then continued to motor, picking up two fours off an Anderson over, before surviving an LBW appeal off Bailey’s makeshift off-spin.
Bedingham and Gay continued to chip away, with the target dropping below 150, as Lancashire’s hopes of a third successive win dwindled away.
Gay then reached three figures with yet another boundary and took his side within 100 of the target. Bedingham then smashed one of Bailey’s off spinners for six and joined Gay in reaching three figures, the 18th time the South African has done so in First Class cricket for Durham.
Gay then passed 150 for a fourth time in a Durham shirt and Bedingham heaved the part-time spin of George Bell to the boundary.
The pair then saw out their magnificent effort to see Durham home with eight wickets and 18.1 overs to spare.
Day 3: Lancashire- 370 all out (100) & 260/9 dec (85.3) Durham- 295 (87.2)
Matthew Potts and Ben Raine take three wickets each but Lancashire’s Paul Coughlin hit his second First Class century to put his side in the ascendency on the third day of their Rothesay County Championship fixture.
Lancashire came into the day on top, holding a first innings lead of 75 after bowling Durham out for 295 on day two, but they were left reeling after Matthew Potts blew away their top order to leave them 72 for six.
However, a partnership of 131 between Michael Jones and Coughlin halted the slide for the Red Rose, as they both passed fifty and built a big lead for the visitors.
Jones fell after tea but Coughlin notched three figures for the first time in a Lancashire shirt and they declared on 260 for nine, setting Durham a target of 336 to win.
With Lancashire looking to build on their first innings lead of 75, Durham needed quick wickets in the morning and they managed to get George Balderson cheaply, as he was caught behind off the bowling of James Minto.
Durham continued to probe and they got a second soon after as Ben Raine removed Keaton Jennings, after he edged one to Kasey Aldridge at second slip, who produced a stunning diving catch.
First innings centurion Marcus Harris then came to the crease and ticked Lancashire’s lead past 100, but he wasn’t there for long as he was caught behind off the bowling of Potts.
The England bowler then had another just three balls later as he bowled Josh Bohannon, with the Lancashire man leaving an inswinger that clattered into his stumps.
Potts had a third when Matty Hurst edged to second slip to leave Durham in dreamland, but Jones and injury substitute George Bell managed to get Lancashire to lunch without further loss.
Jones and Bell’s aim in the first exchanges of the afternoon was to protect their wickets and they did just that as they successfully negotiated the first half-hour after lunch.
However, Bell then departed after he edged a Raine delivery to second slip.
Lancashire’s lead ticked over 150 with a rare boundary on the legside from Coughlin, who looked to be more proactive than his teammates at the crease.
Coughlin, who sparked some impetus into Lancashire’s innings, and Jones continued to frustrate the hosts and were scoring more freely later in the afternoon session as their partnership continued to build and the lead moved past 200.
Coughlin then reached fifty for the first time in a Lancashire shirt and Jones followed soon after, as they completed a successful rescue mission for their side with an imposing target now in their sights.
Jones hit the first six of the innings down the ground just before tea and they resumed their pursuit of runs after tea.
However, Callum Parkinson got the breakthrough as Jones was caught after mistiming a sweep by Aldridge, who took a superb one-handed catch, which helped him equal Durham’s club record for catches in an innings.
The Red Rose ticked their lead over 300 in the evening session, as Coughlin was joined by Tom Bailey as they prepared to face the second new ball and the former Durham man smashed his first six of the innings.
Bailey was then LBW at the hands of Raine with the new ball to give Durham their eighth, while Mitch Stanley was then run out by Parkinson.
Coughlin then notched up his century and immediately after Lancashire declared on 260 for nine, setting their hosts 336 for the win.
Durham were then due to face eight overs of bowling, but bad light intervened, bringing an early close to play.
Lancashire- 370 (100) Durham- 295 (87.2)
Matthew Potts led a lower order fightback from Durham as they defied a brilliant bowling effort from James Anderson and Lancashire on day two of their Rothesay County Championship clash.
Potts and Ben Raine cleaned up Lancashire’s tail with minimum fuss in the morning, as Durham bowled Lancashire out for 370. However, the hosts’ batting line up struggled to click into gear during the early stages of their reply, with Anderson’s early double blow handing Lancashire the initiative.
Tom Bailey took two poles in the afternoon to put the visitors in cruise control, but Potts’ fifth First Class half-century along with defiant knocks from Raine and Callum Parkinson led a fightback and helped Durham reach 295 all out, a first innings deficit of 75.
Durham came into the morning with the aim to dislodge unbeaten centurion Marcus Harris and it was Raine who finally got him for a sublime 146 as the Australian edged to second slip.
Durham then cleaned up the Lancashire tail quickly, as Potts dismissed both Mitch Stanley and Anderson in the same over.
Durham started their reply with a testing period against Anderson and Bailey under the lights and the visitors got off to a great start as the former bowled the dangerous Ben McKinney.
Anderson then struck again as he got one to swing into Alex Lees’ pads and the Durham skipper was given LBW.
Emilio Gay and David Bedingham joined forces at the crease, with Durham desperately needing a partnership, but that wasn’t to be as Stanley got the latter LBW.
Gay and Graham Clark managed to get their side to lunch without further loss, but the visitors were celebrating a wicket once again after the break, with Clark edging a Balderson delivery to slip.
Lancashire were then hit by an injury blow themselves, with spin bowling all-rounder Arav Shetty sustaining a hand injury and wicket keeper George Bell replaced him.
Gay was keeping his team’s hopes of getting close to Lancashire’s score intact, but the visitors kept on cranking up the pressure with a probing line and length.
However, when it appeared Durham were steadying the ship, Gay and Kasey Aldridge fell in successive balls, both edging Bailey deliveries to slip.
Ollie Robinson then fell LBW to Stanley to deepen Durham’s woe, as they were still some way off avoiding the follow-on.
Raine offered some resistance but he was then part of a calamitous run-out with Potts, as Matty Hurst’s direct hit slammed into the stumps when Raine was well out of his ground.
Injury replacement Minto joined Potts for his first action of the game and he looked the part with the bat alongside Potts, helping Durham pass 200 as they continued to frustrate Lancashire.
However, Minto’s defiant knock came to an end, as he edged a delivery from former teammate Paul Coughlin straight to the slip cordon.
Durham then avoided the follow-on and picked up a batting bonus point, with Potts passing fifty when an airy cut shot flew to the boundary.
Parkinson, who was dropped on six, ably assisted Potts during a final wicket stand worth 78 that was Durham’s biggest in their innings, and the day concluded when Bailey got Potts LBW for a vital 66.
Durham take seven Lancashire wickets on the opening day but Marcus Harris’ second century of the season for Lancashire defied Durham’s pursuit for wickets on an enthralling first day of their Rothesay County Championship Division Two clash.
An evenly-matched morning session was played out between the two, as Durham took three Lancashire scalps despite a series of dropped catches, with Harris one of the beneficiaries.
The Australian then cashed in across the afternoon and passed three figures in First Class cricket for the 35th time during the evening session, but wickets kept tumbling at the other end, with Ben Raine picking up three of them as Durham chipped away.
However, Harris remained unbeaten on 135 and Lancashire reached close on 356 for seven to give the visitors the edge after day one.
Lancashire were put into bat by Durham at the toss under sunny skies at the Banks Homes Riverside and the visitors got off to a fast start, but Matthew Potts struck back for the hosts as George Balderson nicked one to second slip.
Durham soon got their second as Josh Bohannon thrashed Sam Conners’ first ball of the season straight to Potts at cover.
Conners continued to cause problems, beating the bats of Keaton Jennings and Harris on numerous occasions, but the Lancashire pair kept their wickets intact while taking run-scoring opportunities when they arose.
Jennings was then dropped twice on 26 as Kasey Aldridge failed to cling on to an edge from a Raine delivery at second slip and David Bedingham dropped him at third slip after Conners found the outside edge.
Harris was then given a second life which Durham would come to rue as Ollie Robinson dropped him on 22 after he nicked a Raine delivery. However, at the other end, Jennings’ luck ran out as he chopped on to his stumps at the hands of Aldridge.
After lunch, former Durham man Michael Jones departed after edging a Conners delivery to third slip. But the ever-reliable Harris remained and he passed fifty for the third time this season.
Matty Hurst joined Harris and consolidated for Lancashire in the afternoon, with the former looking to keep the scoreboard ticking over, hitting the first six of the match, and Harris continued to accumulate.
A fifth wicket then came for the hosts as Hurst’s handy knock came to an end after Raine got him LBW. Conners very nearly had a third, as Arav Shetty feathered one down the legside, but a juggling Robinson couldn’t cling on.
Raine then struck with the final ball before tea as Shetty was caught behind. Harris and Paul Coughlin, coming up against his former employers, resumed after tea and they took Lancashire into bonus point territory.
Harris then reached his century with a single on the legside and was leading his side to a competitive total along with Coughlin.
Durham turned to the second new ball to bring them a wicket and it did as Raine sent Coughlin’s stumps flying. However, Lancashire then passed 300, picking up a second bonus point, as Tom Bailey looked to be the latest to support Harris.
The tailender held firm, as Harris accumulated more runs which included a delightful cover drive to the boundary.
Lancashire managed to tick up their third bonus point and they safely negotiated the final overs of the day, concluding it on 356 for seven.
