Greenwell scores three figures in exciting draw

Result: Durham 2nd XI (464 & 291/4d; Greenwell 114*, Trevaskis 56*, Harte 53) drew with Leicestershire 2nd XI  (457/8d & 291/7; Swindells 86, Ali 68; Harding 3/78)

Durham Academy batsman Ross Greenwell scored an unbeaten century as Durham’s second string drew with Leicestershire in an exciting finish at Emirates Riverside.

Resuming the day on 39/2 with a lead of 46, Greenwell was well supported by half centuries from Liam Trevaskis & captain Gareth Harte, with the opener finishing on 114.

Greenwell, who appeared for the Second XI during last season, faced 173 balls & scored 13 boundaries in his knock.

Ryan Pringle added 32 & all-rounder Trevaskis scored his 56 off just 36 balls, allowing Neil Killeen’s men to declare with Leicestershire needing 299 to win from an eventual 50 overs.

Harry Swindells raced out of the traps & put on 107 with Aadil Ali for the third wicket, edging the Foxes towards their target with wickets in hand.

Two wickets for Trevaskis, including both Swindells & first innings centurion Ateeq Javid, slowed the run-rate & George Harding bowled Ali to leave them 209/4 from 41.3 overs.

The experienced Mark Pettini struck 62 from 45 balls, ably assisted by quickfire knocks from Zak Chappell & Rob Sayer, but he was caught off Harding from the final ball as the sides settled for a draw.

Close, Day Two: Durham 2nd XI (464 & 39/2; Taylor 1/3) lead Leicestershire 2nd XI (457/8d; Javid 173*, Ali 61; Harding 3/58) by 46 runs

An unbeaten 173 from former Warwickshire all-rounder Ateeq Javid followed by late wickets brought Leicestershire back into it after Day Two of the friendly at Emirates Riverside.

George Harding took three wickets from 23 overs, including two in the 93rd over, before a partnership of 117 for the ninth wicket almost brought the visitors level before they declared.

The early wickets of Michael Jones & wicketkeeper Ryan Davies ensured they finished on top, with Ross Greenwell & Gareth Harte the unbeaten men at the close.

There were wickets for Gavin Main, Ryan Pringle & Scott Steel on Day Two but Leicestershire’s experienced middle order all contributed.

Close, Day One: Leicestershire 2nd XI (40/1; Gibson 1/16) trail Durham 2nd XI (464/4d; Jones 164, Richardson 123, Pringle 73*) by 424 runs

A mammoth partnership between Michael Jones & Michael Richardson set the Seconds up for a huge day of run-scoring on the first day of the friendly against Leicestershire at Emirates Riverside.

The pair put on 256 for the second wicket, with Jones scoring 164 & Richardson 123 before the pair retired at the tea break.

Cameron Steel (44) also returned from the illness which kept him out of First XI action last week, putting on 114 for the first wicket with the Scotland international.

Jones struck no fewer than 22 boundaries, including four sixes, while Richardson scored 14 boundaries of his own as the visitors toiled.

Ryan Pringle continued the onslaught after tea, scoring 73 off just 60 balls before the declaration came after Gareth Harte was run out unfortunately backing up.

Neil Killeen’s side got through ten overs before the close, with Academy prospect Oliver Gibson removing Harry Swindells in the seventh over.
