Seconds reach Trophy semi-final

Result: Warwickshire 2nd XI (291/3; Rhodes 101, Lamb 78*, Pollock 68) beat Durham 2nd XI (285; Poynter 76, Rimmington 75, Clark 58; Thomson 3/46) by seven wickets

Durham’s 2nd XI have reached the semi-final stages of the Second XI Trophy, despite defeat to Warwickshire in their final North Group match at Jesmond.

Worcestershire’s rained off fixture at Northamptonshire ensured no one could overtake Durham in second place, regardless of the result.

Alan Walker’s side will travel to South Group winners Somerset in the semi-final next Friday, with more details to be confirmed in due course.

Durham finished with four victories & two defeats from their North Group campaign, finishing behind Yorkshire on net-run-rate.

Stuart Poynter & Nathan Rimmington scored 76 & 75 respectively as Durham mustered 285 all out at Newcastle CC with two balls of the 50 overs going unused.

Graham Clark added a half-century in a solid 81-run opening stand with Scott Steel (34), the pair having batted together frequently during the First XI’s Royal London One-Day Cup tournament this season.

But the batting otherwise lacked support & Warwickshire’s quick start through Ed Pollock (68 off 35 balls) ensured it would always be difficult to drag back.

And so it proved as centurion Will Rhodes & Matty Lamb put on 161 for the third wicket to steer the visitors home with overs to spare. James Weighell (2) & Nathan Rimmington were the wicket-takers.
