Scott Borthwick to lead Durham out in RL50 starting with Kent opener

Durham begin their Royal London Cup campaign tomorrow when they travel to Beckenham with a 13 man squad being named to face Kent County Cricket Club.

Scott Borthwick has been named captain and will lead Durham for the first time in this format when play gets underway at 11am.

Alan Walker will take on the interim head coach role during Durham’s RL50 campaign being assisted by fellow Durham coach Will Gidman.

Former Australian international fast bowler Shaun Tait has also joined the coaching team ahead of the One Day Cup and will work alongside Alan Walker and Will Gidman for the early stages of the competition. Tait who played for Durham during the 2004 season took 95 wickets for Australia across all formats and also had spells with Glamorgan and Essex.

Since retiring in 2017, Tait has progressed into coaching, working as bowling coach for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, head coach for Adelaide Cricket Club in South Australia’s Grade cricket competition and worked within the Australian pathway system.

Director of Cricket Marcus North said: “We are very much looking forward to getting underway tomorrow at Kent with our Royal London Cup campaign and all the squad and coaching staff are excited at what the next month will entail.

“It is great to have Shaun  joining our support staff for the early part of the competition and we look forward to him bringing experience and a new voice into our camp.  Joining Durham will benefit both Shaun and Durham Cricket and we are sure he will enjoy his spell back in the North East.”

Shaun Tait added: “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to join the Durham coaching staff.

“Having played there in my younger days, there’s some unfinished business for me. They’re a great club with a history of success and I am keen to make a contribution to some wins in my short stint. I can’t wait to meet the squad and get going.”

Matt Salisbury is not available for selection and is currently isolating having came into close contact with a coronavirus case.
