Callum Parkinson takes 5/81 as Durham Second XI secure final day victory over Kent Second XI at Polo Farm

Callum Parkinson claims five wickets on the final day as Durham Second XI secure 124-run victory on day four against Kent Second XI at Polo Farm.

Victory over Kent means Durham have started their 2XI Championship campaign with back-to-back wins with three fixtures remaining in the group stage.

Beginning the day on four without loss and requiring a further 405 runs to win, the hosts made their way to 50 before losing a wicket as Callum Parkinson’s delivery trickled into the stumps.

Jonathan Bushnell then took Durham’s second with the score on 82 before a stand worth 60 saw Kent reach 142.

Parkinson struck twice as the Ds began to take regular wickets, having Will Harby caught on 49 at silly point for before bowling Corey Flintoff. Brett Hutchinson then removed Ollie Morgan’s off pole for Durham’s fifth strike.

Parkinson soon claimed his fourth as he trapped Marcus O’Riordan lbw for 47 and Hutchinson struck again in the following over as he located Tejpa Birdi’s outside edge.

Bushnell knocked out the middle peg of Ben Burgess to put the hosts eight down before taking his third to leave the hosts nine down.

Parkinson finished with Durham’s best figures of 5/81 with Bushnell taking three wickets and Hutchinson contributing two scalps

Scott Borthwick scores 138, backed up by Haydon Mustard’s 65 and Luke Symington’s 49 as Durham Second XI push for victory against Kent Second XI at Polo Farm.

Kent Second XI managed to add a further 22 runs for their final wicket partnership in their first innings before Borthwick removed Srithan Chanda to leave Durham with a lead of 40.

Wilf La Fontaine-Jackson helped the Ds to a quick start with 22 from 29 in a 51-run opening stand with Symington in 9.3 overs.

Symington shared a further 75 with Borthwick before he fell for 49 with seven fours to his name with Durham on 126.

Stanley McAlindon made nine before he became the second batter to fall to Oliver Butterfill. Borthwick went on to claim his half-century from 90 balls as he began to up the tempo in a partnership worth 140 with Mustard as Durham doubled their score.

Borthwick went to three figures in 143 balls with 17 boundaries and added three further fours and sixes apiece on his way to 138 as Durham cruised to 326/4 before wickets began to tumble. The visitors declared on 368/8 with a target of 409 set for the Spitfires.

Tejpal Birdi starred with the ball for Kent as he took 4/98 with Matt Quinn and Butterfill claiming two wickets each.

Alan walker’s side had eight overs to bowl at Kent in the evening which the hosts saw off wicketless, scoring four runs and requiring a further 405 for victory on day four.

 

Durham Second XI 373 v Kent Second XI 311/9

Mitchell Killeen and Callum Parkinson take two wickets each as Durham Second XI lead by 62 runs going into day three against Kent Second XI at Polo Farm.

Beginning the second day of four on two without loss and trailing by 371, Kent had an opening partnership worth 64 before the visitors dealt two blows in the space of as many overs as Callum Parkinson took a pair of scalps.

Jonny Bushnell then struck twice in two balls with the hosts on 73/4 when he knocked over Corey Flintoff’s middle stump.

The Ds continued to chip away after lunch as Zac Mawdesley somewhat fortunately picked up the wicket of Ollie Morgan before Brett Hutchinson disrupted a stand of 64 for Kent’s seventh wicket.

Mawdesley then removed centurion Street for 114 with Alan Walker’s side still in the lead by 149.

The Spitfires put on 81 for the ninth wicket with Matthew Quinn scoring 45 before falling to Killeen.

The hosts managed to add a further six runs before the close of day two, ending the day 311 for nine and trailing by 62.

 

Durham Second XI 373 v Kent Second XI 2/0

Scott Borthwick and Mitchell Killeen lead the way for Durham Second XI, enjoying a strong batting day against Kent at Polo Farm Sports Ground.

After winning the toss, captain Borthwick elected to bat first against Kent. Bill Prideaux struck early, with the removal of Luke Symington in the fourth over.

Wilf La Fontaine-Jackson and Borthwick shared a strong stand of 129 for the second wicket as Durham cruised to 141 for one with both batters scoring half-centuries before being removed within five overs of each other.

Borthwick went to fifty from just 49 balls and ended up scoring 80 from 91 with 10 fours and two maximums whilst La Fontaine-Jackson made 53 from 97.

Haydon Mustard and Stanley McAlindon added 44 together to take Durham past 200 but Street had both caught in the same over and when Robbie Bowman was removed cheaply in the following over, Durham were six down.

Kent claimed a seventh wicket before Killeen led the recovery for Alan Walker’s side as he put on a partnership of 107 with Callum Parkinson.

Killeen made 78 from 86 featuring 12 fours and a six before becoming Prideaux’s third scalp of the day. Parkinson batted on and made his way to 66 as Durham were eventually dismissed for 373 on day one, leaving three overs to bowl at Kent.

Kent managed to add two runs in the final three overs, trailing by 371 with 10 wickets in hand going into day two.
