Sam Conners takes 3/11 but Durham Second XI fall short in their bid for silverware at Second XI Finals Day, losing out to Warwickshire Second XI at the semi-final stage at in Wormsley.

After opting to bat first, George Drissell scored 11 runs from the opening five balls before losing opening partner Ben McKinney first ball. Haydon Mustard and Drissell (21) were then dismissed in quick succession with Durham 27/3.

Wilf La Fontaine-Jackson top scored with 29 for Durham as wickets tumbled around him with the Ds reaching 79 by the time he became the seventh wicket to fall.

Sam Conners and Daniel Hogg both fell cheaply before Mitchell Killeen added 17 to take Durham past 100, eventually being bowled out for 102.

Ethan Bamber was the pick of Warwickshire’s bowlers as he claimed 3/14 with Jake Lintott, Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Adamy Sylvester all claiming two wickets apiece.

Rob Yates got the Bears off to a flyer with 23 runs from the opening two overs before he skied a Sam Conners delivery. Conners struck again in the fifth over with Warwickshire 31/2.

Warwickshire added 20 runs for the third wicket before wickets in back-to-back overs gave Durham a glimmer of hope with their opponents 68/5 and requiring 35 to win.

But the Bears added 21 for the sixth wicket and despite Conners finding Bamber’s outside edge to claim two in two balls.

Conners finished with 3/11 and he was backed by a wicket each for Paul Coughlin, Luke Robinson, Drissell and Hogg as Durham claimed seven wickets in vein.
