Onions honoured by ICC nod

“I think the game’s kind of in the balance a bit really.  Obviously it was great to get 90-odd ahead on that wicket, it’s a good wicket and as a bowler it keeps you interested really.  With the new ball, when the lacquer comes off it does tend to swing a bit.  It’s going to be a good day tomorrow, I’m going to enjoy it, obviously going to try and swing it round.  We’ve got ten tough wickets ahead of us, Thursday is going to be a big day.

“Shiv’s hundred today was phenomenal, we know he can bat a long time and in the context of the game, it’s hopefully going to be a match-winning performance”, said Onions.

On his Wisden nomination he added, “It’s a great honour – I didn’t know about it, someone said Congratulations to me and I said ‘what for?’, then I saw it on text.  To be nominated alongside the other world class players up for it is a huge honour.

“I think it shows any up and coming young player wanting to do well that if you put in the hard work you eventually get your rewards.  I’m very pleased that I’ve had the luck that I’ve had this year, I’ve enjoyed it,  I know there is more hard work to do for Durham.

“Durham is my home, we’re a happy family in the changing room, we do everything for each other as a team.  I would never have played for England if I hadn’t taken wickets for Durham, I’m looking forward to the challenge over the next couple of days and the rest of the season.

“My short term goal is just to bowl well tomorrow”.
