Northants win at Emirates Durham

After winning the toss and electing to bat first opener Mark Stoneman top scored for the Dynamos with 36 before he was eventually caught by Brooks off the bowling of Hall, having already been dropped twice in the innings.

Ben Stokes (24) and Albie Morkel (35*) were the other contributors to the Durham total with the side posting 130-5 in their 20 overs.

The Steelbacks got off to a flying start in response and were 56 without loss after six overs.  Northants were 57-1 after Liam Plunkett sent Vaas back to the dug out for just 16 when he was caught by Breese off the seamers second delivery.

Wakely and White, who went on to score 63 and pick up the Man of the Match award, put on 64 before their partnership was broken in the 15th over with Wakely trapped lbw by Harmison on 35.  Northants lost another man without adding to their total and were 121-3 after a wicket maiden from Gareth Breese that that saw White caught behind.

David Sales and Elton Chigumbura guided the Steelbacks to victory and qualification to the quarter finals with a boundary and thirteen deliveries to spare.

At the close of play durhamccc.co.uk spoke to Ben Stokes, “I don’t think we ever really fired as a unit, we struggled to put in srong, consistent team performances and there were so real stand out performances, I think Ross Taylor was a big loss after everything he contributed. He won us two games with his batting really and I think after he left we struggled to get partnerships together.  On the bowling front, I thought it was quite good, in patches, especially the spin. Overall, I’m disappointed with the way the campaign has gone – sixteen games and four wins – but you’ve got to move forward.

“I was quite excited for the first few games but it’s even harder playing t20 than even Championship or forty over cricket – it’s non stop and you don’t have time to stop and think about what you have to do.  I can’t say I haven’t enjoyed myself even though we haven’t performed well. Overall, I’ve enjoyed the experience.”
