Nic Maddinson joins up with Durham squad for Derbyshire County Championship fixture

Attention now turns to red ball cricket when Durham host Derbyshire at Seat Unique Riverside, starting tomorrow [Monday 11 July].

County Championship cricket returns after four weeks of Vitality Blast T20s with James Franklin naming a squad of 13 for this week’s fixture.

Durham are currently sixth place in Division 2, while Derbyshire are fourth with 111 points, 13 points behind this week’s opposition.

Worcestershire were Durham’s last opponents in the County Championship with a number of changes being made ahead of the Derbyshire fixture.

Alex Lees returns from England Test duty and comes straight back into the squad having missed the Worcestershire clash due to the New Zealand series.

Nic Maddinson has now arrived and is set to make his Durham debut on Monday at the top of the order, while 18-year-old wicket-keeper batter Tom Mackintosh will take the gloves in professional cricket for the first time, having been included in the 13.

Stanley McAlindon is also named in a County Championship squad for the first time, with the Cumbrian youngster the leading wicket taker for Durham Seconds in the Championship so far this campaign.

Brydon Carse is not available this week having joined up with the England squad for their ODI series against India which gets underway on Tuesday at the Kia Oval. Sean Dickson continues to recover from the right hamstring tendon tear he suffered against Glamorgan but is not yet available for selection.

David Bedingham, Scott Borthwick*, Jonathan Bushnell, Paul Coughlin, Michael Jones, Oliver Gibson, Alex Lees,  Nic Maddinson, Tom Mackintosh, Stanley McAlindon, Ben Raine, Chris Rushworth, Liam Trevaskis

Words from Nic Maddinson

I am very excited to be here with Durham, I have settled in during the last week and got to meet a few of the guys I haven’t met before, I am really looking forward to what’s to come. I have wanted to come over and play in the County Championship for a long time and I am really thankful to Durham for the opportunity. I hope to be able to contribute in a Durham shirt to some wins and do well for the club while I am here.

Derbyshire

Coach: Mickey Arthur

Captain: Billy Godleman

Last year’s performance: 5th (Division 3)

2021 leading run scorer: MJJ Critchley (1000, 60.52)

2021 leading wicket taker: BW Aitchison (34, 38.6) Overseas players: Suranga Lakmal (Sri Lanka), Dustin Melton (Zimbabwe), Shan Masood (Pakistan)

Key player:  Wayne Madsen is a key member of the Derbyshire top order battning line up which has been evident this summer across both formats. He is enjoying his red ball cricket this season where he has scored 856 runs averaging over 70. His highest score of 176 was in Derbyshire’s most recent County Championship game against Sussex.

Under the radar: Anaj Dal – Dal’s breakthrough came last summer when he scored his maiden hundred, 106 against Leicestershire at Derby, featuring in a county sixth wicket record partnership of 227 with Brooke Guest. He has so far this season scored 417 runs and claimed 14 wickets.

Young potential: Michael Cohen – A skiddy left-arm quick from Cape Town, the 22-year-old made an encouraging start to life at Derby last summer, taking five wickets and hitting a match-clinching 30* on debut against Notts. The former Western Province seamer – who took his 50th first-class wicket before turning 21 – should have plenty of opportunity to impress.

Match Centre
