Meet winter signing Michael Richardson

“I’ve spent the winter playing cricket for Western Province Cricket Club in Cape Town, South Africa.  Cricket and sport in general were a massive part of my childhood, I grew up with cricket in my life, especially as my Dad (David Richardson) was so successful.  We used to go and watch him really often and growing up surrounded by the game means that I’ve always had an interest in it from a very young age.  I’ve always really admired the likes of Brian Lara, Jaques Kallis and Mark Boucher.

“It was undoubtedly my career highlight to sign for Durham. Before that, I was incredibly proud of being asked to captain the MCC Young Cricketers last year and I was delighted with my 136* against Glamorgan second XI in 2008.

“What struck me the most when I spent some time up at Durham was the professionalism and the team spirit – which I’m sure are major reasons that they’ve won the Championship for the last two years! The guys in the Second XI are genuinely interested in the First XI results and vice versa and that’s a really nice thing to be a part of.

“I’ve not myself any targets for 2010 yet – I think my first aim has to be settling in to my new environment up at Riverside – I really can’t wait to get there!”
