Luke Symington stars with bat and ball but boys’ Under 18s exit County Cup with Scotland defeat

Durham Under 18 boys slipped to a three-wicket defeat against Scotland in the ECB County One Day Cup at Morpeth despite Luke Symington impressing with bat and ball.

Durham skipper Symington won the toss and elected to bat with Robbie Bowman and Symington adding 67 for the first wicket with Bowman falling for 20.

Faizan Ghumman feathered one behind for 9 however a 73-run stand for the third wicket between Symington and Owen Harwood steadied the ship for Durham.

Symington led the way for the hosts scoring a fine 99 off 87 balls with 18 fours – edging one behind one shy of his century.

Hugo Croft (38), Brett Hutchinson (33) and Jim Twiddy (25) all contributed down the order as Durham posted 288/9 from their 50 overs.

Durham started strong in reply as Twiddy dismissed Finlay Carter for 6, however a partnership worth 106 for the second wicket between Theodore Robinson and Rory Grant put Scotland in a strong position.

Grant looked well set top scoring for Scotland with 122 off 139 balls but he was dismissed by Symington with Bowman taking a good high catch.

Symington continued where he left off with the bat picking up four wickets for 73 runs, along with 2 from Jim Twiddy and one from Max Percival.

Symington continued to pick up key wickets throughout the Scotland innings however 19 in 9 balls from Woodhouse with 2 fours and 1 six saw Scotland edge home with 6 balls to spare.

Durham will now host Cumbria or Derbyshire in the Plate round of the ECB competition on Monday 14 July at Norton.
