Lewis Latest: Injury Updates

“It’s been looked at by Nigel Kent (Team Physiotherapist) but we are still waiting for the Radiographer to tell us the results”

“He did it in his first spell. He tried to keep his first spell going because I think he felt at that stage that once he stopped it was going to be hard to get going again.”

“As it turned out, once he stopped he needed to come off the field within 20 minutes of his spell finishing”

“We’re hopeful it won’t be a long absence but he may require some time away from the field” added Lewis.

Whilst Onions has been ruled out of Friday’s opening NatWest T20 Blast match with Worcestershire Rapids, there is a more positive outlook for Usman Arshad.

“Usman had a little bit of trouble on day one with his back and his side” said the Durham Head Coach.

“It seems to be settling and the fact that he hasn’t had to bowl since has helped. He should be available for consideration on Friday”

Fellow seamer Jamie Harrison, who didn’t travel to Hove due to a foot problem, could also feature against Worcestershire.

“Nigel will see him when we get back tomorrow and we are more hopeful that he’s going to be back and fully fit for Friday and the match at Taunton”

Durham will make the trip to Somerset on Sunday for the LV=County Championship game that starts on the following day.

Lewis confirmed that Paul Coughlin will miss the fixture, but the 21 year old is nearing a return to action and will start bowling again next week.

With a number of injuries, Lewis admitted that his fast bowling resources are being stretched, but they should be able to cope for the upcoming game.

“I’d say at this stage we’re not expecting to look into the loan market for Taunton unless anything happens between now and Sunday.”

A new physio might have to come in on loan however, as the injury curse claimed another victim yesterday.

“Nigel himself has a slight knee injury!” reported Lewis. “He was genuinely on the physics bench yesterday, I couldn’t believe it”

Despite a packed treatment table, the team are in good spirits and gave Kumar Sangakkara a send-off on Tuesday night.

“We had a team meal with Kumar last night which went nicely, and he’ll join up with Sri Lanka tomorrow”
