Jennings and Richardson star on third day at Aigburth

Durham were 187-4 at the close of play, with Keaton Jennings top scoring with 70, on the third day having bowled the hosts out for 262.

Overnight rain prevented any play before lunch on the third day of Durham’s LV= County Championship match against Lancashire at Liverpool but once the action began the day went very much on Durham’s favour.

Graham Onions struck first, in the tenth over of the morning, his third with the new ball, when Tom Smith was caught behind nine short of his century.

It took just seven more overs for Durham to dismiss Lancashire with Onions claiming his fifth five wicket haul of the season when he bowled Glenn Chapple for 8.

Ben Stokes got in on the action, picking up his third wicket, when Michael Richardson caught Simon Kerrigan for just 1.  Four balls later he caught Gary Keedy (1), who became Onions sixth victim, as Lancashire were dismissed for 262.

The Durham innings started well with the opening stand reaching 90 before Stoneman was caught at short leg by Steven Croft on 44.

Keaton Jennings went on to score his first Championship fifty, off 80 deliveries which included six boundaries before he was caught by Croft off Keedy for 70. Durham were 146-3 after Stokes was caught at mid wicket by Ashwell Prince, having struck one boundary, giving Keedy his second wicket.

By the close of play Durham were 187-4 with Michael Richardson 39* and Paul Collingwood 5* having lost Dale Benkenstein with four overs remaining when he was bowled by Kerrigan for 15.

Durhamccc.co.uk spoke to Keaton Jennings, “When Colly asked me if I wanted to open I said yes, it’s good to test myself and I wanted the challenge.  I think patience is a massive part of my game so I just waited for balls in my area and tried to capitalise on them.

“From a young age my dad has tested me and always taught me never to back down.  If you can test yourself against greats in the county game and succeed and come out on top then you grow as a person. To have Chapple bowl at me and test me was a privilege.”
