Hogg and Hopkins shine as Durham Academy finish runners-up in the Protech Durham Senior League Cup

Durham Academy defeated Chester-Le-Street by 51 runs in the semi-final of the Protech Cup before falling short to Burnmoor in the final, despite star performances from Daniel Hogg and Henry Hopkins.

Haydon Mustard won the toss, choosing to bat first. Daniel Hogg and Charlie Coulthard ensured Durham raced out of the blocks, scoring 81 runs from the opening five overs; before Hogg fell in the sixth to the bowling of Robbie Dawson.

Hogg fell for a rapid knock of 51, from just 24 balls featuring six fours and four sixes. His wicket was the first of three in consecutive overs for Chester-le-Street with Amaan Ulhaq having Coulthard out for a quickfire 30 before Dawson dismissed Mustard for six.

Dawson had Callum Gaffney out caught for his third in the tenth over, leaving Durham 100 for four. Luke Symington and Robbie Bowman rebuilt Durham’s innings both making scores over 30.

Symington fell in the sixteenth to Ulhaq with Durham on 158. George Darwood joined Bowman to help Durham reach 186 by the beginning of the last over.

Darwood finished 16 unbeaten as he saw Symington, Maxwell Jackson and Rohan Vagadia fall in the final over, finishing 190/8. Dawson took 3-26 for the hosts with Stanley McAlindon (2-42) and Ulhaq (2-39) supporting.

Durham started positively with the ball, Darwood striking in the first over, removing Andrew Smith for zero. Jacob McCann scored a brisk 31 before being bowled by Henry Hopkins in the fifth.

Vagadia had Dawson caught by Symington in the sixth as Durham took wickets in back-to-back overs, with the hosts 51 for three.

Durham took wickets in consecutive overs again, Kenzie Peakman removing Charlie Purdon for 21 before Hopkins had Matthew Cranston for his second, leaving the hosts 93 for five in the eleventh.

Gaffney had John Coxon lbw for 31 before Hopkins took his third wicket, having McAlindon stumped to reduce CLS to 101 for seven. Darwood claimed his second in the fifteenth before Peakman bowled Ulhaq in the following over.

Jackson took the final wicket for Durham to ensure a victory margin of 51 runs, bowling the hosts out for 139. Hopkins finished with 3-18 from four overs with Darwood taking 2-25 and Peakman 2-26.

Durham faced Burnmoor, who chose to bat first upon winning the toss in the final at Chester-le-Street CC. Durham started well with ball in hand as George Darwood dismissed Karl Turner in the second over, before Kenzie Peakman had Ryan Pringle the following over, putting Burnmoor 12 for two.

Henry Hopkins claimed the next three wickets for Durham; Ross Greenwell for 30, Allan Worthy for 11 and Marcus Brown for 37, with Burnmoor 94 for five.

Maxwell Jackson and Jack Brassell took a wicket apiece before Haydon Mustard and Brassell each had a run out to leave Burnmoor nine down.

They finished 137 for nine after their 20 overs, setting Durham 138 for victory. Henry Hopkins starred with the ball again, claiming 3-26 from his four overs.

Durham’s start did not go as planned, Charlie Coulthard and Luke Symington both falling early to leave the youngsters 12 for two.

Daniel Hogg alongside Mustard shared a 30run stand  before the latter and Callum Gaffney fell in quick succession. Durham had made it to 60 when Ryan Pringle had Hogg stumped for 47, a knock featuring five fours and two sixes.

Durham struggled following Hogg’s dismissal, ending up 93 all out with Ryan Pringle and Josh Coughlin sharing five wickets to take Burnmoor to a 44-run victory in the final of the Protech Cup.
