Women’s Head Coach Danielle Hazell will lead one of two coach development workshops specifically supporting the development of the women’s and girls’ game across the county as part of Durham Cricket Foundation’s initiative to support grassroots coaches.
Taking place on Thursday 16 October at Belmont School (6.00pm – 8.30pm), Hazell will share her extensive playing and coaching expertise in a dedicated session designed to support club coaches working with female players.
As a former England international and world-renowned bowler, Hazell will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the type of training County Age Group players receive, giving coaches a better understanding of how to nurture young talent within their own clubs. Her session will also explore tactical differences between women’s and mixed cricket, as well as how to identify and support players with the potential to specialise, including spin bowling.
Alongside this, another workshop will be led by the Foundation’s Head of Female Participation Marsha Davies on Thursday 9 October (6.00pm – 8.30pm) at Belmont School. This session will focus on the fundamentals of bowling, batting and fielding, offering practical drills and techniques for grassroots coaches to take back to their clubs.
Marsha said: “It’s fantastic to have Dani leading one of the workshops. She is a brilliant role model for both players and coaches. For our volunteers, being able to hear directly from her and learn from her international and county experience is an amazing opportunity.
“These sessions are about sharing good practice and giving grassroots coaches the tools to make a real difference. By building their knowledge and confidence, we can ensure girls across the county have the best chance to develop, enjoy the game and reach their potential.”
Hazell’s career achievements speak for themselves. She has represented Durham, Yorkshire, the Melbourne Stars, Adelaide Strikers and England, and at her peak was ranked the world’s number one T20 bowler. Since retiring from playing, she has coached the Northern Diamonds before being appointed as Durham’s first-ever Women’s Head Coach.
Together, the two workshops aim to equip coaches with the skills, knowledge and confidence to support the growing women’s and girls’ game in the North East, ensuring players of all levels have the chance to develop and thrive.
