A jaw-dropping sixth wicket partnership of 248 – the highest ever at Scarborough in first class cricket – means Durham are facing a gargantuan task to beat their northern rivals in the LV County Championship clash at North Marine Road.

Day three will start with Yorkshire 426 ahead with one second innings wicket left as tons by Glenn Maxwell and Adil Rashid put Mark Stoneman’s side to the sword.

Rashid and Maxwell helped Yorkshire reach 420-9 at the close and Durham will now have to bat exceptionally well to beat the LV County Championship leaders.

It was a situation far removed from that which prevailed just before lunch when Rashid joined Maxwell with Yorkshire tottering on 79-5, but the sixth wicket pair cut loose in the afternoon as the bowling wilted.

Both batsmen generally kept pace with each other until Maxwell put his foot on the accelerator as he approached three figures and he reached his century by clearing the rope off Scott Borthwick, his ton coming off 101 balls with 14 fours and two sixes.

Rashid had completed his own half century from 70 deliveries with ten fours and he showed few signs of getting out as he moved towards his century from 125 deliveries, with 19 boundaries.

Acting captain Alex Lees and Andy Hodd took the score from 10-0 to 35 in the morning before Lees, who made 19 with three boundaries, hung out his bat at Chris Rushworth for wicket keeper Michael Richardson to take the catch moving to his left.

Jack Leaning drove Jamie Harrison elegantly through the covers for four but he clipped the next delivery straight to Mark Stoneman at mid-wicket and Yorkshire were 62-2 and on the slide.

Hodd, having patiently made his way to 21, suddenly flicked at a short ball outside off stump; from Graham Onions and was caught behind and Gary balance played on against Harrison, losing his off stump.

Yorkshire were 79-5 when Gale received a brute of a ball from Onions which he could not avoid and Richardson held his third catch. It was a landmark delivery for Onions as it brought him his 500th wicket in first class cricket but few in the crowd of 4,100 could guess at the transformation which was about to take place.

The marathon partnership was finally ended at 327 when Maxwell was caught by Graham Clark off Ryan Pringle for 140. It was the highest sixth wicket partnership ever, breaking the old record of 210 by Phil Mead and George Thompson in the Players v Gentleman match  of 1911.

Rashid was out 42 runs later before Tim Bresnan and Liam Plunkett both chipped in with 20s. Steven Patterson and Ryan Sidebottom added four more runs after Plunkett was removed leaving Yorkshire 420-9 at the close.
