Durham v Warwickshire day one round up

Durham secured their first batting point at home on day one of their LV= County Championship clash against Warwickshire, at the close the hosts were 228-5.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first Durham lost two early wickets are were 23-2 after Rikki Clarke caught Mark Stoneman (7) and Gordon Muchall off the bowling of Barker and Woakes.

Ben Stokes (66) went on to score a 95 ball fifty which contributed to his 109 run partnership with Will Smith who was trapped lbw by Wright on 47 after the lunch break.
Stokes (66) was bowled by Wright on 66 as the light faded before tea.  At the break
Durham were 152-4 as Paul Collingwood and Dale Benkenstein returned to the crease.

Rain and bad light played a part in two attempts to re-start as play was stopped at 4.20pm but eventually re-started with 22 overs remaining after 13 were lost to the bad weather.

Dale Benkenstein and Paul Collingwood batted fluently and looked untroubled as they added 78 to the score.  Benkenstein was caught by Wright off the bowling of Woakes four overs from the end, bringing Jamie Harrison to the crease as nightwatchman.

At the close Durham were 228-5 with Collingwood 43* and Harrison yet to score.

At the close of play Ben Stokes said, “Getting that hundred definitely  gave me a lot more confidence than I had before that game and I’ve been very careful about how I have been going about my batting in the last few weeks and I think it’s shown in my performances.

“With not having a good start to the season it has matured me in a way because knowing that if you stick in through the hard periods you know it’s going to be easier after that. I’ve had to work for my runs in the last couple of innings and it’s nice playing a different role to what I have played in the last two seasons.

“I want to do well every time I go out there and bat and not give my wicket away too easily.  I really wanted to dig in and do as much as I could.”
