Durham to face Surrey in T20 County Cup quarter-finals after thrilling super over win against Somerset

Durham will face Surrey after securing a thrilling victory via a super over against Somerset to progress to the quarter finals of the Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup.

Danielle Hazell’s side will compete with Surrey for a place at Finals Day, held at the Cooper Associates County Ground on Monday 26 May.

Hollie Armitage won the toss and chose to bat first in Exmouth, taking Durham to 28 after four overs with Bess Heath.

England spinner Charlie Dean was the pick of the bowlers and she removed both openers before Mollie Robbins uprooted Mia Rogers’ leg stump to leave Durham on 35 for three after six overs.

Mady Villiers helped Durham to 50 but departed the next ball for 16. Durham found themselves 66 for five when Abi Glen picked out Heather Knight at mid-off.

Emma Marlow and Phoebe Turner added 17 for the sixth wicket before the latter was caught by Skelton off the bowling of Alex Griffiths.

Marlow made 28 and rallied in a 29-run stand with Katherine Fraser as Durham reached three figures in the 17th over.

Fraser made a valuable 23 before being bowled by Griffiths off the final ball of the innings as Durham finished on 124 for nine. Dean finished with figures of four for 12 in four overs.

Bex Odgers and Emma Corney kickstarted the Somerset chase with 50 in the opening five overs. Odgers rushed to 39 but departed lbw to Villiers with the Wyverns on 54 in the sixth over.

Corney then fell for 12 caught by Fraser off Katie Levick’s bowling. Fran Wilson was caught behind, and when Sophie Luff was stumped, 54 for none had become 66 for four.

Dean and Knight added 26 before Villiers trapped the former England skipper lbw for 13.  Fraser had Dean stumped for 16 in the 15th over, leaving Somerset 98 for six.

The hosts were soon 98 for seven when Jess Hazell was lbw to Levick in the 16th over and when Skelton fell for four Somerset were 103 for eight with 20 deliveries remaining.

Robbins was caught by Armitage off the bowling of Fraser for one at 107 for nine off the final ball of the 18th over.

Somerset required three runs and Durham needed one wicket with one over to be bowled. Fraser conceded no runs from the first five balls but Griffiths claimed two off the final delivery to send the game to a super over.

Villiers bowled the super over for Durham, having Odgers stumped by Heath on the third delivery before also seeing Knight stumped as Somerset set Durham a victory target of nine from their six balls.

Heath reverse-swept Dean’s first two deliveries to the boundary and then took a single to win the game for Durham, taking Armitage’s side through to the quarter final stage.
