Durham target 113 on day four

Scott Borthwick picked up the first wicket on day three getting Keedy out lbw after with his third ball after an hour and a half of spells from Harmison, Plunkett, Blackwell and Claydon.

The hosts edged into the lead just before lunch with Lancashire 85-3 after 37 overs, Chanderpaul 11* Chilton 39*.

With the pitch not doing as much as it had the previous day Durham struggled to pick up wickets quickly with Mark Chilton going to score his second fifty of the match before he was trapped lbw off Blackwell leaving Lancashire 107-4.

Chanderpaul and Croft put on a fifty partnership with the latter dismissed shortly after when a dive to the left by Michael Di Venuto saw him caught at slip off Borthwick for 28.

Chanderpaul, partnered by Cross, went on to score his fifty from 111 balls, including five fours and a six.  Blackwell got the key wicket just before tea, bowling Chanderpaul for 67.

At the tea break Lancashire were 194-6 with a lead of 138 and Luke Sutton set to join Gareth Cross in the middle.

Plunkett came on after the break, with Blackwell’s perseverance at the opposite end rewarded with his 7th delivery after the break trapping Cross lbw for 13 and Lancashire seven down for 201.

Plunkett’s economical bowling and patience was eventually rewarded when Sutton was out lbw for just 6.   The final two batsmen didn’t put up too much resistance, Mahmood, with a runner, caught behind off Blackwell without scoring and a direct hit from Scott Borthwick running out Glenn Chapple for 19.

Lancashire posted a second innings total of 226, setting Durham 171 for the win.

Durham were 27-1 when they lost Mark Stoneman for 14 who was bowled by Chapple.   Mitchell Claydon came in as night watchman with 4.1 overs remaining of the day’s play after Gordon Muchall was caught in the slips by Horton off Keedy for 3, leaving Durham 43-2.

At the close on day three Durham were 58-2, Di Venuto 34* and Claydon 1* – requiring 113 runs tomorrow for the victory!
