Durham suffer Warwickshire defeat

After a winning start to the season, Durham slumped to defeat against current County Champions Warwickshire in their second LV=County Championship match. Warwickshire amassed a total of over 690 runs, with Durham only able to reach 274, however Durhams highlight Scott Borthwick was able to claim his first county century.

With Durham’s bowlers on fire in their first match against Somerset, a repeat performance was needed against Warwickshire. It was not to be with Warwickshire scoring an impressive 345 in their first innings after being put into bat by Durham skipper Paul Collingwood.

Although Durham got off to a shaky start in their first innings, a middle order push from Stokes (33), Collingwood (74) and Borthwick (101) steadied the ship to reach 284, trailing by 61 runs.

Warwickshire’s batting form continued in their second innings and Durhams bowlers were made to toil, with big scores from Troughton (45), Ambrose (105) and Clarke (92). A lead of 412 was enough as Warwickshire declared on 351 for 8.

Hopes of a draw were dashed as Chris Wright took 6-31 with Warwickshire bowling out Durham for just 94, completing a victory of 318 runs.

Despite some positive batting from Collingwood and Borthwick, Durham’s top order still seem to be finding their feet this season.

With a derby against Yorkshire up next, Durham will be looking to bounce back to winning ways on home turf at Emirates Durham ICG.
