Durham return to red ball cricket with 13 man squad named for Glamorgan County Championship fixture

Durham are back in red ball action tomorrow and the return of the County Championship as Durham prepare for their final three games of the 2021 season.

Following last weeks opening County Championship match against Surrey being cancelled due to a covid-19 case in the Surrey camp, Glamorgan will be Durham’s first opponents in tomorrow’s County Championship Division 2 game at Emirates Riverside which gets underway at 10:30am.

Lead High Performance coach James Franklin has named a 13 man squad for game one of Division 2  which sees the return of Paul Coughlin to the squad having recovered from a thigh injury he picked up against Lancashire in Durham’s T20 campaign.

Liam Trevaskis also returns to the squad, having impressed for the Second team in recent red ball matches, including a five wicket haul against Lancashire last week in the 2XI Championship.

Alex Lees also makes his red ball return having missed the last two Championship games with a broken hand.

Brydon Carse is unfortunately not available for tomorrow’s game having picked up an injury this week during an inter-squad training session.

Cameron Bancroft is no longer available for the club and has now returned back home to Australia ahead of the domestic season getting underway in Western Australia later this month.

Squad vs Glamorgan (5-8 September)

David Bedingham, Scott Borthwick (c), Paul Coughlin, Graham Clark, Sean Dickson, Ned Eckersley (wk), Michael Jones, Alex Lees, Matthew Potts, Ben Raine, Chris Rushworth, Matt Salisbury, Liam Trevaskis.

Words from James Franklin

Our last game of cricket was actually against Glamorgan back in the cup final so hopefully we can do one better this time around from that game, but that was a different format and they outplayed us in that final which they deserved to win. They have been travelling pretty well in the Championship throughout the season and have had a number of performances in their group who have done well in the Championship. They are probably licking their wounds a little bit from their loss against a good Essex team, so I would imagine we will get a very motivated Glamorgan squad coming to the Riverside on Sunday. However, Durham are very much motivated too, we have played some very good red ball cricket and are excited to get going this weekend at our home ground. As I have said all season, if we can get to day 4 and are in a winning position and have an opportunity to win on the final day then that is all we can ask for.

The Opposition

Coach: Matthew Maynard

Captain: Chris Cooke

2020 Leading Runscorer: Chris Cooke (294, 32.66)

2020 Leading Wicket Taker: Dan Douthwaite (14, 33.78)

Overseas Players: Michael Neser (Australia – May until end of season).

Key man: Kiran Carlson – Carlson is Glamorgan’s leading run scorer this summer having had a successful red ball campaign and 50 over competition. The Welsh man has scored 811 runs so far in the Championship with a best of 170*, he is also averaging 57.93.

Flies under the radar: Dan Douthwaite – The 24-year-old was Glamorgan’s leading wicket-taker in the Bob Willis Trophy and with veteran all-rounder Graham Wagg leaving the club he has the opportunity and potential to make another step forward in his career.

Best Play Under 24: Callum Taylor – Confirmed his promise with a debut first-class century against Northants last summer. Born in Newport, although he grew up in Queensland, he bowls handy off-spin to mark him as a talent to watch.
