Dale Benkenstein, captaining the side in Phil Mustard’s absence due to a foot injury, lost the toss and Durham were asked to field first.

An outstanding run out from Mark Stoneman saw opener Chris Jones returning to the pavilion for 0, having faced just eight balls.

Academy player Mark Wood, making his first class debut, claimed two successive wickets, leaving the university side 59-3.  He finished his two spells having picked up 2-26 off his 13 overs.

Greg Smith stuck in and managed to score 85 before he became Liam Plunkett’s only victim of the innings.   Chris Rushworth managed to dismiss Luke Blackaby for 13 before he managed to settle in at the crease.

Scott Borthwick claimed three wickets for 30 runs in his 9.2 overs and Mitchell Claydon picked up two scalps, both caught behind the stumps by Michael Richardson.

Stoneman and Gordon Muchall, both looking to continue their pre season tour form, stuck in until the close of play, at which time Durham were 55-1, with the batsmen 55* and15* respectively.
