Durham have upper hand over Warks

Di Venuto fell to Tahir shortly after when he was caught by Javid just eight short of his century.  Durham were 166-3 once Benkenstein was bowled by Clarke off the first ball of the 42nd over for just 1.

By lunch Durham were just short of the 200 mark with Blackwell and Muchall both 16*.  The home side lost four wickets for just 41 runs after lunch with Rankin picking up the scalps of Muchall (18) and Stokes (4), Tahir bowling Blackwell and Maddy catching Thorp, off Carter, for 6.

Phil Mustard and Mitchell Claydon steered Durham past the 250 mark before the captain was bowled by Tahir on 25.  Tahir took his tally to six from the innings after Rushworth was out lbw and Claydon was caught by Botha on 20.  Claydon’s dismissal brought the Durham innings to an end with 289 on the board.

Warwickshire came out with a target of 354 for the victory but were immediately in trouble when Stephen Harmison struck third ball and Westwood knocked the delivery to Benkenstein in the slips.  Mitchell Claydon picked up two wickets before the close – Botha caught behind for 33 and Maddy out lbw for 6 .

Troughton and Javid rallied and put on 65 with both still at the crease at the close of play at which point Warkwickshire were 111-3, still 243 behind.

At the close of play Mitchell Claydon said, “We said taking anywhere between three and five before the close is where we wanted to be. There were a couple of things that didn’t go our way which if they had, we could have got them five down but that’s cricket and you’ve got to move on.

“The weather isn’t supposed to be great tomorrow but if we can get on for three quarters of the day then we should be able to get the win.”
