Durham hang in to take game to fourth day

Rain once again affected the start of play on day three of Durham’s LV= County Championship clash against Nottinghamshire, who resumed on 231-4.  By the close Durham were 203-9, trailing by 165 runs.

Durham eventually bowled Nottinghamshire out for 335 with Mitchell Claydon the pick of the Durham attack claiming 4-84 off his 19 overs. It was Callum Thorp who finally brought Michael Lumb’s tenancy at the crease to an end on 131 when he was victim to one of two
fantastic catches by Will Smith in the field.

Michael Di Venuto and Will Smith headed to the middle to begin Durham’s second innings knowing the side needed 368 to claim victory.

At tea Durham were 26-3 having lost Di Venuto (6), when he was caught by Franks off Fletcher, and Smith (10) and Mark Stoneman (2) both to Andre Adams in the 13th over.

Durham lost two quick wickets after the tea break, those of Dale Benkenstein and Ben Stokes, which saw the total at 30-5.

Ian Blackwell added 14 before he was caught by Phillips off Franks bringing Scott Borthwick to the crease to join Phil Mustard.

The pair steadied the ship a little with a partnership of 58 which was brought to an end when Borthwick (22) was bowled by Carter.

Samit Patel had Callum Thorp stumped on 12 with Durham 139-8.  Mustard went on to score a valiant 80 before being caught by James Taylor off Adams in the first of the additional eight overs in the day, due to Notts claiming the extra half hour to try and secure the win.

Despite rain throughout the final over, Graham Onions (15*) and Mitchell Claydon (18*) battled to continue the game into the fourth day. Durham will resume on 203-9 at 11am on Sunday.
